30-30

I was just pondering why on earth the 1,700 ft lbs limit in England/Wales, when the calibre has probably killed more deer than any other calibre in the US.

I'm inclined to give it a try but will just chat through with Paul first, not least as he's the poor sod stuck with helping me get started with the reloading.
In Sweden its 800j at 100m with a 50gr bullet for roe deer. Many 222r were bought for roe deer hunting.

My Bergara ba13 are used for a similar type of hunting they can by find in .243w, .308w and more cartridges. Shorter than one yard, with moderator a meter long about 3,2-3,3kg.

Funny you say that about brass. I got plenty brass in stock but I'm still using stuff I bought years ago and it's been loaded several times!

Because some dam experts sat on a committee got involved and had to cover their arses incase they got accused of something!
Basically fear of ridicule made the decision!
Same morons who decided .222 wasn’t enough for roe 🙄

Another option is a Browning BLR lever action in either 243, 6.5 CM or 308.
Not as nostalgic as a 30-30 Marlin or Winchester but the BLR are a nice rifle.

You are absolutely spot on Kiwi. I have a BLR in .308. It has a 3-9 x 40 scope sitting in Conetrol rings and when shouldered everything combines to have my aiming eye instantly looking directly through the scope. The tapered 18 inch barrel means the rifles balance point is correct because due to its weight always being centered between my hands. Unlike other convential lever actions which need flat nose bullets the BLR has a flush, removable box magazine - 4 rounds - which gives it the versatility of being able to safely use pointed bullets. My exclusive 'go to' ammunition is always Norma factory rounds.

I love the Winchester 94 action.
Light weight.
It's open, crap doesn't collect in it.
The trigger is easy to work on.
Disassembly is a dodle.
A 30cal running on 223 charge weights!
What's not to like.
Just off the phone with my FO, wants to know why I want it when 7mm-08 will do the same job.
Told him 7mm-08 for open ground shooting and 30-30 for woodland stalking.
He will think about it and get back to me in a day or so. Fingers crossed

30-30 running around 2,400 FPS will do a lot less meat damage on smaller deer than 7mm-08.

Wiltshire approved my variation for 30-30 in exchange for the 6.5CM so it's now 30-30 for Woodland High Seat and 30-06 for everything else.
I'm in the Republic of Ireland, Put in application for the license so its 50/50 whether they will grant it.

As it happens I do a safe recycling service of steel primed cases. It's free also, just the postage required. Can only handle a maximum of 1000 cases so far.

After ordering a Marlin Dark, the importer initially advised there were a batch at the proof house and so would be fulfilled within just a week or two. However, they later advised they had made a mistake and there weren't enough rifles to fulfil all the orders and they had no idea how long the next batch would take to arrive. We were fortunately able to cancel the order and replace with another supplier for an in stock Classic Series which will arrive this week, although we still need Spud to help with 30-30 brass, bullets and dies so it may be a while yet before we're up and running.

Honestly though, it feels like a lucky escape. Getting deer legal loads in 16" barrels is stretching the limits to the extreme. The variation having also included conditioning my Marlin SBL .38/.357 for deer, our attempt to make a .357 load workable on Muntjac unfortunately failed. We realised 2MOA at 25m but that translated to 6MOA at 100m, the short 16" barrel just not sufficient to adequately stabilise the bullet out to the longer distance, despite running at the maximum 90% of maximum pressure.

Watching the latest Deercast last night, although previously vaguely aware of Kipplauf's, if I had been properly aware sooner, although a lot more expensive it does feel one would have fulfilled the requirements of a much lighter weight woodland high seat rifle considerably better and more easily. However, we are where we are and already so far down the lever action road simply need to complete the project and see how it turns out.

It’s definitely a good point , thanks for the heads up

I too was after a 30/30 Marlin SBL but having spoken to several dealers they have all said it’s a 6-9 month wait so I’ll look at other options

I already have a 45/70 , a 303 and a 223 for ALQSFTC and targets so it’s not a major deal for me

Have you thought of going for 45-70 instead ?
