Failure to renew???

Im not sure why you should be giving them notice that the due date is approaching or that there will be a change for storage etc. if you have put your paperwork in good time and not heard anything then the reasonable assumption is that at some point before the relevant day, the certificates will arrive.
It always has been like that, until suddenly it’s not. Then you have to decide do you lodge your guns or risk a seizure?
Problem is IME once you’ve lodged your guns they then try to prevent you getting them back by refusing your renewal ( which they sat on for four months).
There’s nothing you can do about it except take them to court, which is not a fun process.

A wise precaution for everyone is to make sure you have some legal cover in place at renewal time.
If you have you ducks in a row before hand it shouldn’t be an issue, renewal lands on the mat, medical forms in next day, paperwork a day later sent special delivery!

Then wait

It really is as simple as that!

Thank you for contacting the Devon & Cornwall Police Firearms Licensing Department.
Before we respond, please check the FAQs page on our website. If your query is answered there, we will not reply to your email.
Certificate Expiry
Devon & Cornwall Police operate a zero-tolerance policy regarding possession of firearms after a certificate has expired. If your certificate is due to expire—either on the original date or an authorised 8-week extension—you must lodge your firearms and notify the Firearms Licensing Unit before the expiry date. Possessing firearms after your certificate has expired is an offence under Section 1 of the Firearms Act 1968. This may result in prosecution and will affect future applications.
Grant and Renewal Applications
We recommend starting your application as soon as possible and ensuring you are aware of your certificate expiry date. Please note that we accept renewal applications up to 4 months before your certificate expires. For both grant and renewal applications, please ensure your GP report is fully completed, covers the last 10 years, and has either been uploaded with your application or sent directly to us by your GP. Incomplete reports may delay or invalidate your application.
Our service level agreement for processing applications (both grants and renewals) is 112 days, although time frames may vary depending on information received during the process. Please only contact us for an update if 100 days have passed since your application was submitted.

All Other Services Such as, Changes to your Certificates or Personal Details:

For changes of address, cancellations, firearm/shotgun transfers, lost or stolen certificates, amendments to existing certificates, or variation requests, please use the relevant forms in the Applications and Contact Us section of our website. These notifications cannot be accepted by phone.
Possible Delays
Whilst delays are possible, in most cases this is due to the requirement for further enquiries. These delays can be kept to a minimum by applicants responding to contact from FELU and providing any additional information that has been requested in a timely manner. Please be aware in some circumstances we will reject an application if we have not received this further information within 14 days of the request.

Seems reasonable until. . . . . You have applied and followed precisely their timescales. The day before your temporary extension runs out, they ring you and tell you that you need to lodge firearms at RFD.
You say that they need to issue sect 7 extension. They reply we don’t do those anymore. What would you do in this scenario?Asking for a friend?
You need to be ahead of their timescale!

Always think weeks ahead of them that’s the key

And we are now paying how much for this? Full cost recovery apparently. So in return are they not supposed to do the job within time?
Cost doesn’t really come into it, you have to forget the days of when it was cheap!

Those days are no longer relevant, it is what it is and if you want to do it, you’ve got to pay.

I think it’s quite funny that everybody still sits there and dwells on the fact that it costs now more than what I did!

Understood:
Mine was straightforward. GP charge was £20. Looking at the scrawl on that paperwork when I picked it up, it looked as though they thought it was a waste of their time.
Clean driving licence, no convictions, and plenty of reason to own....

But if you have the slightest doubt in the back of your mind, it must be worthwhile making sure you have the funding in place to challenge a decision that goes against you, unless it is clear-cut that you are in the wrong. Either you have plenty of disposable, or you take out cover, or both.

The key to that he don’t get yourself in a situation where you’ve got the question yourself!

When I was younger like any late teens lad I wouldn’t say I was a wrong’un but the people I used to associate myself with were, as soon as I got a shotgun certificate I cut all ties!

It’s not rocket science

But you're a carp fisherman Lee, so you're still mixing with wrong 'uns everytime you go angling 🤣🤣🤣

They dont have a choice. They may not want to issue a s7 as its pretty much the same admin as full renewal but the firearms act is what they have to follow. Put your big boy pants on, be polite and factual and MAKE them do their job. If they cant do it within the prescribed time frames then they should pay your costs or issue the s7.
Correct answer don’t bother ringing basc

Id love to live where some of you guys do!

Ring my FLD and and ask what's happening? I haven't been able to speak to them for about 6 years, it goes straight to a voicemail system that 9 times out of 10 is full then hangs up on you. Emails get replied to about 6 weeks later and normally with a template letter.

Ive had at least 5 different FEOs over the last 5 years. The last one was fantastic and actually answered his phone/emails but has just retired.

Having read through some of this thread, I am very glad I live in Scotland. I have found that initially Lothian & Borders and the Police Scotland (after all the forces were merged into one) have been nothing more than a pleasure to deal with. Nice and efficient and individuals who are genuinely interested in shooting and firearms and have a good level of knowledge. Many do shoot or have shot in the past.

Well..........

Not all of them are nice and efficient or have a good level of knowledge... One immediately springs to mind...

I wouldn't wish him onto anyone...

There are of course exceptions, but in experience Police Scotland are a hell of a lot better than most of those down South.

My mother recently, who live down South recently opened a letter from the local Police Force with a letter of renewal for my father to renew his shotgun certificate.

I had notified that force of his death and that his shotgun was transferred to my ticket. I even sent a copy of his death certificate at their request. Someone hadn’t updated the records.

Someone hadn’t updated the records.

That one doesn't surprise me either...

I sold a rifle I'd bought some 3/4 years ago that I'd bought from someone in London (via here). Got an immediate email from the buyer's authority down south saying it was still registered under the original owner... Said original owner had been through several variations and a renewal, all with the rifle absent. Was under the impression that England had a unified system, but clearly not in this case...

It happens - especially when a rifle is on multiple certificates. I know one person who had a very nice tikka heavy barreled 308 sporter from the 1990’s - the one with a semi target type stock. He kept it on his fathers estate and it was the head stalkers certificate. It got run over by that stalker and then replaced with something else. He did know anything about it until a good while later on.
