338`s wish pick one.

You also missed the 8.6Blk, a dedicated subsonic type round. Would be fantastic for deer species inside a couple hundred meters. I agree with whats been said above, a big one and a small one would be ideal. The Lapua is an easy choice as it it very common, or perhaps the 338 Win.

we have rules about the energy/velocity etc for shooting deer here and to do it subsonically you need a 750gr bullet iirc

Interesting, that seems a bit excessive. Even subsonic these will put a deer on ice within a bound or two.

no doubt , but UK government loves to put stupid rules on everything !

you'll like this , we in england can't use .223 on roe deer but you can in scotland !

now i might get this wrong and i cannot be bothered to check but in england you need .240 min calibre and 1750ft/lbs of energy but in scotland you need .240 min calibre minimum velocity of 2450ft/s and 1700ft/lbs of energy and i'm pretty sure it used to be minimum 100gr bullet but with us being forced to use non toxic now that minimum bullet weight has been dropped this is for 'big' deer

in england we can use .223 and the likes on CWD and muntjac as long as its a 50gr bullet and 1000ft/lbs but roe needs the big deer calibres and the above regs but in scotland you can use .223 on roe deer

so a 223 is legal in Scotland for roe but not England but in England you can use a 45/70 but it doesn't meet the velocity for use in Scotland - make sense of that!

.222 I believe, not .223
Legal for roe in Scotland, but not in England or Wales.

it was just an example tbh , .222 was the hind culling calibre of choice by an old stalker i knew up there in the highlands , when i asked him if it was just head and neck he said no just pump one in the boiler room and it'll go down no probs , i never tried it but have no reason to not believe him

Wow, that is interesting. In my state for deer you can use .224 caliber centerfires IIRC, and for larger animals like Elk there is a minimum .24 caliber and 1000ft lbs of energy at 100yds.
