Someone across our street been to the doctors for depression his now on tablets for it
He has a sgc and so does his daughter same house
Doctor informed the police
He says he had an email back from the police saying his daughter must be in charge of the keys and shotguns for 6 months
As he is not allowed seems utter nonsense to me but he is bull shitter almost all the time

Odd that. Normally nobody, not even other licence holders, can have access to your keys.

Seems like it would have made more sense to ask him to hand the shotguns over to somebody else for six months
Not an issue with SGC.

Any SGC holder could give another SGC holder access to their keys/cabinet for 72 hours under the shotgun loan clause, presuming the cabinet only held section 2 shotguns.

It's only FAC where it become a problem.

As the individual in questions daughter has an SGC, logic would dictate it is a shared cabinet/s already anyway.

So all makes perfect sense and I think is a very clever, soft handed and empathic way of the police dealing with this situation.

If anything, he's unlucky that he did not inform the police from the onset.

Whilst my experiences are obviously informed by my dealings with the rather excellent team of Police Scotland in Edinburgh, I recently had to deal with a very serious (but falsified) accusation of physical abuse involving a minor.

Proactively engaging with the team at St Leonards Station played a big part in keeping the FLD on my side during the regulatory investigations by the teaching regulators. Kept access to my firearms throughout the process and they actually attempted (unsuccessfully) to try and help speed along the process because they could see it was a load of nonsense as well. Did have to deal with 2 or 3 welfare visits as well, as they were concerned for my mental health as there was significant impact for me over the last 12 months because of it. 😅

Rules around access to shotguns are essentially the same as FAC, except you can lend them to another SGC holder for 72hrs without telling your firearms dept.

Or you just write the guns onto the daughters ticket as "shared" and job done.

And crucially, the more important difference between Sec1 and Sec2 for these purposes, you don't need to have open authorities to acquire. That allows for just writing them over as shared much easier.

It can be done .
I was the holder of my mates safe keys , when he was given anti depressants by the doctor. He was still allowed to use his guns whilst he was shooting with me , but I had to pick him up , remove the guns from his safe , then lock them back up when we got home.
This was sgc , and was like that for a couple of years , and then he gave up his ticket when he moved house , and got rid of his guns.

In contrast .

A little while later , another mate was diagnosed with cancer . The police wouldn't let me look after his safe keys , as he's a trained locksmith , and could easily get into his safe without keys.
He had to store his guns with a rfd for a couple of years until his doctor said that everything was OK. The rfd fees were many times the value of his guns , but some of his guns had belonged to his dad and his grandad , so they have great sentimental value.
