Oh Dear...Firearms officer stored surrendered guns at home

There was a FEO over here they have a different title in Germany and he got caught selling hand ins onto the black market, then the ton of bricks landed on him.

I would like to agree with you, but largely when it comes to FEOs actually being interested in shooting, since I have friends and other members from my rifle club who are with forces across the country it seems that nearly all of them have basic knowledge of firearms and an abysmal interest in shooting.
One of my mates from University I used to shoot competitively with is unfortunate enough to be with the Met, and his FEO was an ex armed response copper, you would think he likes shooting, the guy had barely any interest in it and had only ever shot fullbore rifles and pistols for training with the police. My friend had to explain to him several different disciplines of shooting, very basic stuff imo for an FEO to be aware of. They also lied to his face about his moderators he asked for! Shocking.
So, apart from the one FEO that apparently lied about some moderator request, your gripe is with their lack of knowledge or interest in shooting.

How does that make them dishonest?

I don't know how many FEOs you've met, but to claim they are all dishonest is a serious claim.

Friend of mine Northamptonshire requested .303 for deer FEO said no but he could apply for a .308
My good friend @tozzybum on this site was told, when renewing his FAC after loosing a bit of ground, that he could no longer keep his .308, but would be allowed to have a "smaller and less powerful" .270 instead.
I well remember his amusement when he compared the cartridge case capacities of the two calibres!

Many FEOs do understand, but some others have the mentality that if it starts with a 3 it's bad, but if it starts with a 2 it's OK. Metric calibres must throw them into meltdown!

I know of a very similar story some years back. Confiscated items being sold on, but the culprit was given the chance to leave the job, after being moved areas.

Does it really matter. If he is saving valuable/ interesting firearms from destruction then good on him.

Tim, hello hope is well down your end.

I think that is one of the reasons BASC is carrying out a training of FEO's, who as a result will better equipped and more efficient in processing our renewals etc

No, the situation with the moderators was an example of someone being misled on a large scale, essentially, he requested moderators for all of his firearms (minus a shotgun) and he was told that he needed to drop the moderators from the grant since they would be off ticket by the time his FAC arrived, a bare faced lie since he now has his FAC and low and behold moderators are still not off ticket!!!
I myself have also been lied to by at least two FEOs.
Im glad many people have had positive experiences with them, and support more FEOs getting better access to some of the training and experience offerings from BASC and other groups, but clearly there is something wrong when I have had multiple instances of dishonesty/misleading however you want to phrase it, and instances of activities as demonstrated by the gentlemen in the article.

I’ve had no issues with any FEO. But none have been shooters and knowledge has been fairly limited really.

I have dealt with many dozens of FEOs as a cert holder for 40+years, RFD for nearly 30yrs, and club secretary and all bar one have been very professional, that one was removed from the FEO/police position after an enquiry.

Very rarely, one might misunderstand the law or rules but after a discussion and some investigation it's all been sorted.

Misunderstanding the convoluted rules and laws is not them intentionally misleading or being dishonest, I hope that is what you experienced.

If it was true dishonesty I hope it was reported, I'm sure it would have been addressed.
