Tip Of The Week

I sold a new but refurbished one that I bought from the Coleman outlet near Atlanta, Georgia. Cost me around 2005 $35 then sold it unused for 111€ in 2020.
They are now silly money on ebay but if like me you know their weaknesses; they are similer to a Landrover in their desire to rust, its possible to find one worth putting some work into at the right price assuming you need one.

I purchased my first one in the early 80's.

Talking to a youngish heli culler yesterday in NZ. About boots drying out and to use the newspaper. Most of the gore-tex etc boots have fabric layer and extra thick for on mountains. Which ironically makes drying out slower. Just double sock but no the manufacturer designer somewhere had to improve them and the award judges at ISPO likely gave it a top award.. then everyone thought oh this is sazzy idea..had to have that...consequently the entire line of mountain boots are now terrible to dry and complain.
But for a guy who gets around the common old timer tip of stuffing it with news paper to blot up the moisture had somehow eluded him. I chuckled to myself that the current new generation likely haven't seen newspaper.

Another issue is with sticking them next to the fire or hanging above for roasting to dry faster. Also the advice for snoseal etc to put them in the oven so it can melt and absorb is the strange reason for the boots have gotten smaller complaint.

Often oil the flexy creasy looking leather as leather is simply a sponge and when you walk and flex in wet grass etc all day you are assisting the leather to squeeze out the oil it needs to keep the fibres moist and supple so when the leather gets dry and keep on walking the leather fibres fail and the dreaded crack is caused and eventually crack extends all the way through and since most don't like wet feet that another pair of new boots.

Now the manufacturers as in all of them freak out about putting oil on boots. It will void the warranty. Not joking.
But you must go get some mink oil from the cunning old mink who evolved to survive in water and with an old toothbrush or if scots descent the same one you use for teeth and apply it on every single flexy looking thing on the boot often.
