Got several largish herds of fallow on the farm & been trying to catch up with them for a while with no success. Went to a likely location this evening & in the thermal was able to see about 40 moving down through the wood opposite a good 350 yards & in cover from my seat 🙄 All not let as they were heading straight to one of the other guys, except they didn’t, they turned out of the wood & diagonally across the field 😖 Now, if I didn’t have a thermal I would never even have known they were there in the first place… neither would I have seen the group of roe come down through the wood opposite & bed down 🤬

Almost felt sorry for the muntjac buck that paid the price for wandering out of the wood in front of me at very last light.

The fallow seem incredibly switched on at the moment. I've blanked on my last 4 stalks. I see them, but as silent as I am they just know I am there. Even at 100m in dense woodland.

As a very novice stalker i thought it was just me.

Have seen a herd of c.50-60 fallow, mix of does and bucks with one or two mature bucks in it regularly on my perm.

Spent an hour or so crawling on my belly across a muddy field two weekends ago to get into a shooting position and then they fecked off.

I had seen the same herd the day before, and as i got into a shooting position they ran of around 500m away, they then ran back at a 'gallop' leaving the field i was in. I 'chased' around the perm for another two/three hours no bloody sign of them!!

Snap see 5 out in the field but had to get where I needed to be so they went back in! kept going hoping to make 200 more yds! Nope 25 came out with no angle for a shot, waited until deer o'clock mj buck came out clonked him a doe ran out of the cover she went over 500 yds drag and whacked a fox for good fallow measure lol :tiphat:

Not out this evening as I’ve done an early shift at work & reckon my snoring would scare everything deer shaped off long before I saw them 😝

Am watching the weather intently, more accurately the wind, for tomorrow afternoon as I know exactly where the feckers will be about 3 o’clock in the afternoon… about 300 yards out in the middle of a field of winter wheat sunning themselves in the shelter of a fold in the ground! And, thinking they’re out of range of anyone with a rifle… :norty: - now if the wind stays as forecast there’s a nice covert I can get into that’ll get me into a shooting position 🤞

You've inspired me to go out tomorrow morning, before sunrise.

I'm presuming that my (following your post title) F***er of a toddler will sleep through tonight. The little sod is killing me 😴

I couldn’t bump in to fallow on one of my farms for a while now, just so much pressure on them from other stalkers on farms beside me. I planned to go out the other morning but it was real ****y weather, I thought they’d be keeping dry from it. I seen 3 groups on it, 19 in total. Shot 2 does. Not sure but I think the deer associated the rain with safety.

I guess that the Fallow have worked out that you are surrounded by fairy weather stalkers, but didn't factor you in 😃

Mixed weather of rain and sunny spells are great for stalking though.

Of all the deer I have shot (4 of the 6) fallow seem to be the quickest to learn, followed by roe.

Munties are just permanently skittish and cwd are thick as mince!

Well, went out this morning at 0525. Walked down one field, into the woodland. Stalked 50 acres for 3 hours and didn't even catch a glimpse of a deer on thermal.

I heard one shot at 0540, from the big neighbouring farm.

The thing that gets me is if you find fallow with the thermal they are invariably staring straight at you when you swap to glass.

That’s not unique to thermal believe me 🤣 - many is the time I’ve stalked woodland looking for fallow, spotted a tail twitch, then an ear & then realise that I’m pretty much surrounded by the buggers who’ve all been playing a game of “let’s see how long it takes this numpty to realise we’re here before we all leg it”!

I've got that badge!

Alas the wind has gone around too far so the plan is off 🙄

Now got to come up with another cunning plan 🤔
