1 powder for all 3 calibers what would you choose.

Actually you might notice a little quicker than you think Oly ;-)

At uni (at a agri campus) where we used to crush cars with tractors and the like we once ran a book on how long a 1.0 fiesta would run FLAT OUT with NO oil in it, most engineers bet less than a minute or two...the winner was a girl on a marketing course...it ran for nearly 20 minutes!

But running until failure with no oil in is quite a crude test to compared to having the right oil in an engine without seeing some type of problem that can be linked in some way to the wrong oil being used in service. I have seen a certain truck manufacturers engine last 40 mins @ 3600rpm with the sump plug out I have also seen heavy duty diesel motors fail after 45 mins using oil designed for petrol driven engines.
But anyhow sorry to derail your thread Bob.

Derek Lee Gunsmiths in Boston, Lincolnshire advertise Benchmark on there website @ £33.95 and Varget @ £38.95. I think they have only just started with the reloading stuff but there prices seem good.

Best regards

Wayne

I've used H380 for several years but due to a shortage I tried some H4895 and I am now thinking that perhaps the H4895 would have been the better of the two all along.
I've checked the Hogdon web site for all the calibres you mention Bob and it is listed for 20tac, .243 .308 and 30-06 so that seems to be the one to settle for.
Anybody know where it can be bought in bulk.

PS
Ref oil in several different vehicles. OMD 110 was good enough for all the military vehicles I ever came across during my service and they ranged from Track to Earth Moving and light utility vehicles with Big Rolls Royce to mini air portable Landrover engines.
For the non military initiated, OMD stands for Oil Mineral Detergent.

Hi Pete,
OMD 80 replaced the original OMD110 when smaller faster cars were introduced to the military but was still used in the Rolls Royce engines of the Centurian tanks.
Just to keep this thread on track, does anybody know of any bulk buys of H4895 or good deals on standard packs ?

EMcC,

Do they sell mil-surp powders in the UK? If I recall correctly, Muir scored on some military surplus powder a few years back that was equivalent to H4895 (I've still got a pound of it somewhere around the shop), and it was ridiculously cheap...

Don't rub it in :), we have enough problems with our draconion gun laws and licences without you rubbing it in about the availability of mil surp powder.
We have no such thing, that I am aware of, but we are aware of your mil surp bulk buys of rounds by the thousand and special offers of 'buy a car and get a free rifle' etc etc
It would seem the only powder that is commonly available in UK is either from the US at double your price, or Vitahouri from the other end of the world :(

Varget, I'm a big fan of this powder, but it's over £40 a pound now!

So (on average) that would be around 20p per load?

I bought 3 tubs recently at £38 each but even at £50 per lb it would only be 25p per load so, in the overall perspective of the cost of what we do, I will continue to use the powder that you (and I) are big fans of :thumb:
