12 month buried skull prep video

Next time you do it burry the head but leave the antlers above the ground in the box, you can see some of the colouration got ripped out. 👍

If your going for the long haul after doing that place It in a nice bucket of water with a nice heaping douse of dishsoap and leave it another month or two (again, with the antlers out the water) then give it a peroxide.
Bigger bonus if you can use a bucket heater or keep it somewhat indoors out of the cold, 46C Is the ideal temperature you want as that's when fats melt for deer tallow. 👍 will help get rid of a lot of the staining with dirt.

As if my dumbass buried it in the field and couldn’t quite find it to dig it up again. Note to self: use a container.

Mine was in the ground for 3 years , forgot I had even shot it until one day digging out a wee found for a shed and kicked it . Luckily I had taking a picture of it when I shot it .

As long as the sun can’t get at the horn the colour will stay in them , I had that many I started leaving them up in branches of the spruce trees and let the flys eat away . 2 miles away from home so couldn’t smell them 😉

True! I do the same. but in this case It does seem like OP's antler colour did get ate up a bit probably due too the acidity of the soil if I were too guess since Its an organic matter as well keeping them above the soil would avoid this. 👍

I do find roe deer do lose antler colour out in the garden even out of direct sunlight (though not nearly as bad in sun!!) red deer however not so much and hence why I never boil them.

It seems like in your case your stag actually gained colour however Its gained colour in unnatural spots where they were previously white although for being MIA for 3 years I dont think any of us can complain about that lol.

As said bury the head in a bucket of soil leaving the antler above the soil level… park it in permanent shade and wrap in chicken wire to keep the tree rats off as they love gnawing the calcium. Leave a full 12 month then pressure wash… simples.

Why not do the maceration method? Just as hands off process but much faster and better results.

Bucket of water with an aquarium heater at 32 degrees. Change the water every week. 2-3 weeks and done.

Then degrease by going back in a bucket of water with heater and fairly liquid. A few weeks and then done.

Unfortunately it just goes to show how pointless foil hats can sometimes be. Despite that deer having wrapped it’s antlers in the good reflective stuff; you were still able to read it’s mind , Stalk it down , and cut its head off…..
Kindest regards, Olaf
