.17 HMR barrel burner?

This would put me off this specific RFD as he is either trying to mislead you or is incompetent.

Had one for years, countless rounds through it, still an amazing little round.
As above it is a filthy little round so ALWAYS clean it on return home.

More than likely incompetent, been to quite a few RFDs that are mainly selling shotguns for game/clay shooting, but they also sell a few rifles, and the lack of "firearms" knowledge is jaw dropping.

If a hmr, or centrefire rifle is used in damp weather like is typical night time shooting this time of year, if the residue isn't removed from the inside of the barrel it will attract water ------rust----then pitting, for me the minimum after use is two dry patches followed by a lightly oiled patch, or better still 8 strokes with a bronze brush with white sprit, two dry patches followed by a lightly oiled patch, -------i'm not a believer in copper cleaning as i've not found it necessary and it often takes 5 shots to get the hmr back on target after a copper clean.

Was told last week during a visit to one of my local RFD’s that the HMR was a barrel burner with quite a short barrel life. Owned one years ago and looking for another at the moment but didn’t know this was the case. Anyone ever needed to re barrel one or had such an issue?

Who was this RFD?

you couldn't burn out a barrel with a rimfire in a decade of 100s of bunnies every day
it burns no powder, has nothing in the way of heat cycles, usually microgroove rifling presenting reduced resistance and runs pressure lower than my coffee machine

Ha! Coffee machine! I must admit i raised an eyebrow when he said it. I re loaded centrefire for quite a few years so understand pressure's and heat. I was actually enquiring about the price of a new 457 so couldn't believe what he said. I shan't name the rfd as maybe he had had a bad day and was thinking .17 centre fire.
