- dont bother putting batch numbers on a list here, as soon as you have a split or similar problem email hornady direct yourself via there web site give them the batch number and tell them of the problem, keep all uffy cases etc and do not use anymore from that batch. its not on they know of the problem so tell them direct and hopefully things will quickly get sorted

If we dont record the batch numbers WE have no concept of how wide the problem is.
Hornady, CCI and Edgars wont publish that info.

can you put your numbers up on the list? would all help

But for heaven's sake, when talking to dealers and such refer to LOT numbers, not "batch" numbers. Biscuits come in batches!(well, home brewed beer, too, but...) LOT Number is the proper term and one that they will recognize.~Muir

THE LOT NUMBER ON MINE IS J2ON09

these were from a bulkish buy of 600 and have got to the last 100 before having any problems

After my good friend got a 17hmr bullet stuck down his barrel and luckily realised that it did not sound right and check the barrel to see an obstruction, then i started checking my 17 ammo for split cases before use and today i found one! A Split at the neck and i easily pulled out the bullet from the case with my fingers, checked the powder to see if it was damp but looked ok! Thought it could not happen to me! Glad I checked and now I’ll continue,

Received an e-mail today from edgar brothers saying:Dear Gary sorry to hear you have a problem with the Hornaday 17 hmr.

Hornady take great pride in the ammo, they are working with CCI the manufacturer of all 17 hmr ammo to eradicate this problem.

Please advise how much you purchased of this ammo?, and from which dealer?.

I will send you some free of charge replacements to your dealer, will this be the same dealer you purchased the original ammo from?

When you swap out the ammo I will arrange collection of the faulty batch for return to me for inspection.

So out of interest I opened up the other 3 boxes of HMR rounds to find 9 in total with split necks which I have informed edgar brothers about, the lot number of the ammunition is
K30P10

I picked up an HMR rifle last week, I bought 100 rounds hornady and 100 rounds federal, I sighted it in this morning, the weather was a bit windy so although I was getting fairly consistent results on the elevation the groups were a little wide, often two touching and then one 2" right, the wind was L-R. I am new to this though so it could have been me..

One thing I did notice was the Hornady ammo looked dirtier than the federal stuff and once ejected it was marked down the sides, I didn't think much of this as I zeroed with the hornady but I did notice that the ejected federal brass was much cleaner. I am now wondering if I was getting poor case obturation? (spelling) with the hornady stuff. I will try and take some pics and put them up but not sure if the camera will pick it up...

No need for the pics. If you were getting soot down the case you were, by definition, getting less obturation. Chances are it was the annealing on two different lots of brass; one is a little less ductile than the other. Both "brands" you shot are made at the same plant, on the same machinery, using the came components so you can write it off as a brass issue.

You found out that the 17HMR is susceptible to wind, did you? Funny how so many people will tell you otherwise ...before you buy your gun!~Muir

Here's the pic anyway, I noticed just now that one of the federal cases had split. The hornadys (left) are definitely dirty, there was one hornady that had a dint in the side of the case and a mark on the other side that made me uncomfortable using it. Shame no other factory makes the stuff if the CCI quality is this bad...
