.17 Hornet Brass

I’ve literally just embarked on reloading .17 hornet. Whilst removing the primers I noticed a ridge near the base of the case. See photo. Is this normal? The rifle is a CZ 527. I’m using once fired hornady brass from factory ammo which was fired in my rifle.

Depends on your definition of normal..."Normal"? Or "normal for Norfolk"?

In all seriousness though, it is common to see this, in this chambering. Personally, it doesn't qualify as "normal" though, as either the chamber or the brass is slightly out of spec. I certainly don't see this in a 17 Ackley Hornet...

Ha. Thanks. I should say that the new factory ammo doesn’t have the bulge.

I’ll measure the bulge once the brass is out of the tumbler.

I not sure if it’s a dodgy chamber or just a feature of the CZ 527 perhaps. The rifle shoots well

The photo of the bolt seems to show the bulge. A result of the Mauser style extractor I’m guessing and nothing to worry about

Just checked my 17 brass, also shot from a 527 and mine also have a slight bulge

I never had that with a 22 hornet CZ527, I would want the chamber checked out for safety.
If the case can budge like that the chamber is not right (or the cases are under size ?

Thanks. Slightly reassuring. I’ve convinced myself it’s to to with the style of extractor, but I’d be interested to hear from a smith or two.

Checking SAAMI reamer drawings, I can’t see the bulge area accounted for.

I have this on some of my cases. I thought it was an issue with my full length die. Also cz 527. A through 3 away as I felt the ridge was quite prominent

The case diameter just below the bulge is 0.2950”. Just above the bulge is 0.3000”

Good to know. I fl resized the cases last night. Odd how the smallest case I reload requires the most amount of effort to resize! That’s after annealing as well.

Neck turning the little rascals later. That should be interesting on such a small case.

I’m sure .17 hornet was sent to test me. I have a 21st century neck lathe. They list a 20 cutter as the correct cutter. The standard hornet has a 25 degree shoulder

seems I need to get ordering!
