17 Hornet

A lad near me has a 17 hornet, I wouldn't call it an ideal fox round, even 150yds he gets runners, on the coast here so it's always windy. A 223 will dump them on the spot. I'd say your talking 150max with 17hornet
I have a 223 aswell and it shoots out to silly ranges with accuracy
You csnt carry every rifle with you so if im out verminting with the 17 and spot a fox out at 200 i wouldnt think twice about tak8ng s shot ss long as its safe for me to do so

Also are you sure its a hornet and not hmr lol

Thats your opinion buddy
Every shooter has different capabilities and limits , obviously if hes not dispatching at 150 he shouldn't be shooting at that range
17 hornet are capable of more than 150 easy with the right conditions
Even with the wrong conditions (wind) if you know your rifle and all the dope for that set up you should have no problems
Cofidence in your tackle and experience.
If your not sure dont take the shot SIMPLE
Have you ever shot his rifle
If you cant dispatch a fox at 150 with it then theres obviously something wrong with his set up
I use nothing but 25gr v max
Buffet wind better and more energy on target
He is using hornady vmax, I shot it alright I'd like one for crows but not when I have the 223. I think he gets splash wounds and it's not penetrating. If it was mine I'd not use it for fox and would have got rid of it, but it's his so none of my business

Everyone has their own opinions but maybe its just him
Try and go out with someone thats got one thst can shoot and id think you would be surprised at what this little calibre is capable of
17 wsm stuffs foxes at 150 no problem
I go to a range where theres all sorts of calibres and believe me there's a loto of people who cant shoot for toffee
Like i said in one of my other comments
243 bad shot placement and the fox run off after being hit
Most of the time its not the rifle but the shooter squeezing the trigge

When using the 17Hornet on foxes you will get some interestingly different results. Some show no entry wound at all, some have a very destructive entry wound. I've never had an exit wound and the internals are often turned to jelly!

Sounds like a decent little foxing round :tiphat:

It’s going to be a new calibre for me the 17 cf although I’ve shot the hornet for many many years

I shoot my 22 hornet out to a hundred ish ( a small ish) in all probability the hornet I use for everything out to that distance because it has proven to be its best at that range I don’t do elevation if I need elevation I use the next calibre up to ensure the balance is right for a humane kill 222 or 243 my duece is good for 200 yds point and shoot after that the 243 kicks in with very accurate day scope

For the 17 hornet. What range could WE ALL agree on to maintain a humane kill on a fox with a H&L shot and what grn bullet and type

Any recommendations on Ammo makes would be appreciated. BT or SP and or what’s available in factory ammo

Cheers

Phil

Devastating rounds
Kills everything they hit buddy
Ive also got 17 hornet 223 6.5 but cant carry them all at the ssme time
For me the 17 is an all round calibre

Christ

Them coyotes are a size, to grass them you’re going to have to be precise with shot placement, I would think they would carry a rushed shot
Thanks for sharing, appreciated

BUT a .223 with appropriate load will always be better ballisticaly speaking, that’s not opinion that’s just a fact.

Or they just didn’t post videos of all the missed coyotes and runners

Oh well lets shoot everything with a 338 lapua
No messing lol
Its not about balistics this thread its about what you can shoot a fox at ethically with the 17 hornet
Ive got a 223 aswell but the hornet has despatched everything that its been asked to do
Just because you might hsve a 223 doesnt mean every thing you shoot at is going to be dispatched with one shot
We all make mistakes an errors
Ive seen people with thousands of pounds worth of tactical rifles at ranges who couldn't hit a barn door
The calibre of gun is redundant if you dont know the marksman principles of shooting

He's well able to shoot, I still wouldn't recommend a 17hornet for foxing unless all your shots were inside 150yds, I had a 17rem for years, that would be the minimum I'd go in .17 for foxing

Utter Rubbish you can't Legally shoot Deer with a 17cal where as .223 Muntjac CWD add Roe if in Scotland .6.5 is the all rounder

Thats your opinion and i respect it even though i think you sre wronf
So we will agree to disagree lil
How far out would you shoot a fox with a 223 as you seem to rant on sbout this calibre

Have we all agreed then, that inside of 150 yds excluding a variable fickle breeze would be a workable humane shot on distance for a fox

I’ve just grassed a vixen (15 mins ago with my 222 45 grn soft point at 184 yds lasered up, with a photon and NM 850 IR ) it will do that all night, the 17 hornet will fit in perfectly for me as a back up for the 22 hornet and the range in between the hornet and the 222 I’m all excited now :tiphat: can’t wait to get one.

Cheers Guys

But energy buys you margin for error simple as that, a more efficient cartridge bucks the wind better there is no denying that. A 17 hornet is fine for short range fox, .223 can be pushed further in windier conditions its a better calibre for fox. Someone who can shoot a .17HH will be able to shoot a .223 further.

.22 hornet will drop them out to 150/160 like the 17 though the wind bumps it about
