17hmr vs 22 hornet

In my view, it's a reloaders calibre, if you don't reload I definitely wouldn't recommend it as the factory ammo is pretty poor.
I find Privi is pretty reliable as a factory load just know your limits if you don’t reload
Those who know me personally would no doubt state I love to load but frankly this is one caliber I’m happy with so far. Further out I’d use my .22-250 which is laser flat out to 350 yards easily

I found Privi to ricochet a lot, whereas I hardly ever get a ricochet with other home loads. Groups were about 2-3" in my rifle, so not great.

I’m struggling with getting group’s consistent thanks to nerve damage but most of my work with loads is about safely achieving certain velocities

Unfortunately I can’t trust myself to stalk singlehanded in case I get a spasm and throw a shot badly but so far it’s just a fear and most of my single shots have been on the nail
I tend to have to build a test group as five separate shots with a break between each shot

That would be bullet construction I’d imagine although hitting a fox should remove the risk of the ricochet!

What sight you have on the 22-250? If it allows multiple zeros (like digi and thermal), just use reduced load? Or maybe you can get away with single zero but it's a gamble...

Of course ammo should be kept separate, but you'd probly want to use different bullets anyway, like SP designed for Hornet. E.g. Hodgdon readily lists 2000fps / 55gr Trailboss load, and also H4895. Velocity not listed since it's a universal load, but data is available from 35gr to 70gr bullets in 22-250.

Reduced loads:

Basic load data, select 22-250 and H4895 as powder:

"Yeah, well known as bullet stoppers those light bodied, thin skinned foxes, perfect back stop !!"

This is I suspect why the question arises the hmr is generally stopped by a fox not always but often . If it does get through it's not got much left .
Some of my areas are a bit flat and surrounded for comfort so the smallest most fragile projectile that will do the job Is my best option . Less is more in my situation. I don't disregard the 17s potential danger but certainly use it in places I'd not consider the 223 /308. Range is obviously the compromise and I don't go past 120 .

H4895 no longer imported thanks to Reach

Thinking of a short range foxing rifle, I already have a 17hmr but my experience over the years has shown it to be a little underpowered for Foxes. Would a 22 Hornet be a better choice and how do the 2 compare in noise levels ?. Its for use in smaller paddocks around houses where my 22 250 has just too much bark .
I have had the 17 hmr , i would class is at best as " could be used " on fox but dead honest i would pick up the 22lr first ! I had quite a few splash wounds on hares and the flip side zero expansion on longer range crows .
22 hornet is on the other hand the ideal for what you describe and ideal for denning time with a decent moderator .IMG_20210531_212211_BURST001_COVER.webp
