2016 Fishing on Clywedog Reservoir

For those that are interested in fly fishing I will include weekly updates for my local reservoir Llyn Clywedog a scenic 615 acre upland fishery in Mid Wales. To say our season has started wit a bang is an understatement. Another specimen caught this week 9lbs 11oz rainbow. ATB Gaz

Providing the warm weather continues mid June would be bang on for the most exciting of dry fly fishing as the coch y bonddu beetle should be in full swing. Boat demand is very high this season so booking well in advance Is a must especially on a weekend. Send me a pm when it's nearer your visit for an up to date report. Atb gaz

1st Double of the season !! 10Lbs 06ozs :)
This was taken on a Cats Whisker lure from the bank. For the more traditionalist the warm weather has now brought loads of fly life and the lake is alive with rising fish which can be caught on various dry flies, buzzers or diawl bachs. The first sightings of the famous Coch Y Bonddu beetle has been seen this week so the furious surface action shouldn't be too far away. Tight Lines Gaz

Sorry no updates for a few weeks as been away catching a few wild brownies myself in the Highlands.

A rather hectic week at the fishery with the Coch y Bonddu beetle hatch in full flow. Its been very busy on both bank and boat. Last weekend for the first time ever we hosted the Senior Welsh team eliminators, very bright conditions and light winds were supposed to make the fishing challenging but the quality of the anglers changed all that. The competition was fished to a 3 fish kill then catch and release, Saturday top individual caught 19 fish and the overall rod average was 11.2 fish per angler.
Day 2 Sunday which is usually much harder than day one but Clywedog fished even better with the top individual catching an incredible 27 fish and the overall rod average of 13.5 fish per angler. The best areas were cages and Bwlch y gle methods varied from dry fly to midge tip with washing line.
This week the weather has been very warm this has really brought the Coch y Bonddu beetle onto the water and the fish have been feeding heavily on them. Beatle patterns have been very high on the return cards this week. Some anglers have reported not seeing the fish take the Coch's but spooning reveal that the fish are feeding heavily on them.
Another busy weekend approaching as we host the European Bank Championship where the best overall two day angler will collect first prize and go home £500 richer.
Another fin perfect 8lbs 03ozs rainbow was caught on Wednesday of this week, with the successful fly being an imitation beetle.
Tight Lines Gaz

Hi Gaz, what size hooks should I use to tie some [FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Coch y bonddu beetle imitations? Do you have a favourite pattern?
Got my fly rod and reels packed for my trip, but still no certain whether I will get to go fishing or not but best to be prepared!
Cheers

Hi Huckster. The beetle is quite a lump in size and I tie mine on a B405 size 10 or 12. Body is peacock herl, hackle is coch y bonddu (light brown/ginger with darker half nearer the stem and the back is black foam, finally the head is pearly glister. An alternative is to put a thorax of orange seals fur. ATB Gaz

One less to catch for us fishermen . The fish continue to give fantastic sport, most anglers are mainly using dry fly tactics. Coch y Bonddu, Cow Dung fly and Daddy Longlegs catching loads of fish. All areas now consistently producing fish in all conditions. Tight Lines. Gaz
