204 Ruger

Following... I'm in the same boat, and from the small bit of research I've done, the. 204 R seems to be pretty perfect for foxing.

Well documented waste of time , 40grain v max from a 223 beats it handily , easier to obtain more Versatile rifle etc
Totally disagree but each to their own.

I have a Tikka super varmint and it is far more accurate than me, excellent and efficient little round only running powder volumes in the 20's.
A 32gr reload is about 3950 fps and a 39gr, which I prefer for fox, is around 3720 fps.

Highly recommended.

I own a savage LRPV in .204, had it for around 6 years, shot a lot of foxes with it, it’s like a laser, extreme accuracy even with factory ammo, I have shot 3/4” groups at over 100 yards , I reload for it and with 32 gr noslers, its potent on fox, very often no exit holes, dumps all energy.
I was using it predominantly with a thermal scope and have killed hundreds of foxes with it over The past few seasons.

My rifle is very heavy, fully scoped and moderated, I can see the bullet strikes when I was running a night force day scope.

It’s a great calibre, you will enjoy it, but I would get reloading if you do to get the maximum from it, I also run a .220 swift, and it’s hard sometimes to decide which to take out!!
Can’t beat extreme velocity, my .204 is running 32gr at over 4350, and the swift is pounding 50gr at similar velocity’s.
Good luck with your purchase if you do get one👍

Wheres it well documented waste of time. Theres a lot of opinions which everyone has, I have a 204 and wouldnt change it, As said above it's like a laser and does everything I want it too.

I've used most calibres over the years for foxes but now almost always go for the 204. It's a joy to shoot, extremely accurate and seems to shoot pretty well any ammo. and It's really easy to load for, I use 39grn Sierra Blitzkings, as do a lot of others.
I wouldn't claim that it's more effective than some other calibres but it really is a very nice calibre to shoot and with a decent mod is quiet.
Not sure where Valtratom gets his information from but I couldn't agree less and wondered if he has ever actually used a 204! Incidentally, I used a 223 for years for my fox work, but haven't even got one now!

On here ! I wanted a 204 , after reading experiences from people that had run them alongside 223s it seemed a fruitless exercise , there’s several posts at length about the velocities being hyped

I’ve not owned one no , I intended to but read accounts from several folks who bought one and discovered it wasn’t up to the hype and no real difference to a 223 if not slower with a lot less projectile choice so didn’t think it was worth me getting involved in , if I wanted flatter I’d go for a 22-250, seen it said before on here how many people can actually demonstrate how much flatter one rifle is at 300 yards than another ? I know I couldn’t 😂 so just bought what was popular for ease of resale and availability of ammunition

What's your load data for the 32gr running over 4350fps...must be on the hot end of the scale!!

Not posting load data but I’ve worked these up slowly, and all I can say is they are compressed loads!

I shoot a 204 and a 223 for the same targets, the 204 I purchased for the platform and less blast than the 22-250, the 223 was a great deal and allows experiments in heavy for caliber projectiles. The bonus to having all three is somewhat longer barrel life in terms of years.

Had a ruger 77vt in 204 shot a lot of stuff with it imho it wont do anything my 223 doesnt do ,foxes cant tell the difference
223 is more versatile i can shoot anything from my 223

Ive 2 204s,39gr is 3600ps with 25.8gr N133, 32gr is 3 800 fps with 22.5gr N120, both have 20" barrels

a.222 or .223 with 40gr bullets is almost as flat as a 20.4 and negligible additional recoil IMO. The additional drop is tiny, just 0.2mrad out to 350m
a 200m zero yeilds
2.7 inch drop vs 2.2 at 250
7.2 inch drop vs 5.7 at 300
13.8 inch drop vs 10.9 at 350 personally I'd seldom if ever shoot at a fox past 250

As stated far more versatile, legal on several more species too

Perhaps you should read the table of comparisons on this respected web page before you dismiss the 204 especially as you have never owned one

I reload for 4 in 204 chambering and I know those people are not looking to change any time soon - I also load for a couple of 223 and those people feel the same.

I don't think he meant beat it in terms of trajectory, more that it beats it because you can load a 50gr cartridge and shoot cwd, mjk & (in scot') roe
