.204 which manufacturer?

I’ve had a pair of 204’s both Ruger’s the first was one of the 77 Mark II VT’s the ones that are laminated stock grey stainless HB with a factory two stage trigger . I bought that gun slightly used from a friend , he took me to the range and let me shoot it before I agreed to buy the rifle . Shot plain old Hornady factory load V-Max and shot a .35” five shot one hole group . After I got it home I did what I think improved on the trigger a bit . I shot it quite a bit with my handloads and it stayed around 2/10” with an occasional one under 2/10’s . I finally got tired of shooting tiny five shot groups and sold it . Later I acquired a very nice Ruger #1B in 204 that was a consistent 3/4” gun for three shots . Big difference between those two but to be honest each was adequate for its use .

Tikka supervarmint.
I once played in a 300m irrigation ditch that was recently dug, so nice and clear.
Found the zero clicks required and shot a few groups.
I then decided to do a "one shot to count then home" on a fresh target, which obviously involved another 600m walk.
Bang, and let's go look. I couldn't believe the result, it was within mm's of perfectly bang on.

Was it a one shot wonder, probably!
But I went home a very happy chappie that day.

My first .204 was a Rem700.Factory apart from the stock.
Used it once I got competent with reloading it went to my gunsmith, came back with Sako extractor,Timney trigger & 1 in 10 26" LW barrel on it.
Totally different gun,a pleasure to use.Kept it for several years then my smith had a 595 action Tikka with same barrel spec,GRS stock fitted available.
This is my current. 204 "The Grey Lady" which now has an X5i on the top, running 40gr Vmax @ 3700fps.
Off the shelf i would go with a Tikka/Sako rifle.

i bought the kinmber and put one of the hik micro scopes on it and it is an absolute weapon, vey accurate (a bit heavy but dont mind that) feeds well as it has a miny mauser action on it. very pleased. now just need the time to get out and use it more!

just but my lisence in to swap out a .243 for a .204 Ruger. looking at a few different options:
  • a Kimber pro varmint in stainless steel barrel 24" around £600 mark
  • Tikka T3X stainless 20" around £800 mark (worried about it being a bit short)
  • Ruger M77 stainless 24" around £600 mark
  • Sako S491 (brand new custom barrel but old stock and action) £750 mark
I dont have much experience with any of these makes and not sure how i would rank them in order of quality? did look at a brand new savage arms rifle in a shop at around £750 but felt poor quality.
any recomendations or if anyone knows of a good rifle about to hit the second hand market please let me know.
Should have my lisence back in 5-7 days.
Ruger
