This can be done, it will be a case of necking down (probably best annealed and done in stages) the fireforming.

Thanks to all who have commented. I'll stick to the 17 hornet brass. The only new cases I seem to be able tk find are hornady
If anyone knows of any others avaliable I'd appreciate it

I have converted a lot of 22hornet cases to 17hornet it’s not a difficult task, does take a few steps and time.

I did it when i first got my 17 hornet and ammunition and cases were not easy to find and a lot more expensive than 22 ppu hornet cases to buy.

As said you do need to anneal the case before fire forming or the neck or shoulder will split, I also found it best to reduce the neck diameter in two stages.
I made up a couple of die with the help of a model engineer friend to size the neck down to .17
To keep the making of the dies very simple we made inserts to fit two old dies no longer used.
However that then required an aluminium spacer to be fitted to an RCBS rock chucker press, by removing the 7/8 thread adapter, fitting the spacer and reinstalling the 7/8 thread adapter, to give more hight for the die to work.

steps were
remove old primer from the 22 hornet case if required, .223rem die did this
fit aluminium spacer to rock chucker press
lubricate 22 hornet case and first stage sizing 5.5mm with bronze insert die
lubricate case and second final stage sizing with steel insert die.
remove aluminium spacer
lubricate case and size with Lee .17 hornet sizing die.
trim case to length 1.355”
anneal case neck and shoulder
load for fire forming.
trim to 1.340”

found the fire forming load to be a usable rabbit load.

sounds a lot of steps but once setup for each stage it was not too painful a process.
