.22 WMR RECOMMENDATIONS PLEASE

Hi All,

I'm looking for a .22 WMR Semi auto, what are peoples thoughts and recommendations for reliability in a semi auto, reasonable accuracy, and something that can hold a fair amount of rounds.

Also please give me a shout if anyone has one second hand

Thanks in advance

Ian

I have often wondered if I have a need for one of these

The slight issue I have is- if you need the power of the wmr over a 22lr- you also need accuracy- and a semi auto is unlikely to give you this.

I have a 512 in 22lr and it's good. I would happily own one in wmr. Its supposedly one of the more accurate semi autos- but its not as accurate as a bolt action

in theory quite so however .... Its not the rifles really , its the ammo . 22mag was first developed for small carry pistols and it remains like that in its biggest market .
Personally i see no need of the mag for shooting pests 22lr hv and 22lr std then the CCi target quiet ( reduced velocity) cover everything rf for me pest wise.
After that i should just pick up the 22 hornet . I would be very unlikely to get another 17 HMR but besides the auto loading catch that doesn't allow us to have an auto 17 , i simply dont like the " various" ammo failures in those - splash wounds and then failure to expand drove me crazy early days. Shortly after i got rid the whole over-pressure case ruptures thing started .
.22 hornet btw might be in the last of its days with the move to copper yet that is the cartridge of my choice over the 22 wmr
Its good we have choices though not all of us have the same needs or pov

Yup I have read the WMR ammo is variable in its performance. Bolt action HMR will normally be more accurate than a bolt WMR I have read?

Has the wmr ammo quality improved over time ? There do seem to be some newer offerings- Critical Defence for example- which may be well made with stricter QC.

I have a recently purchased a .22WMR semi automatic rifle, Remington 597. I had a semiauto itch for vermin/plinking (tins and AOLQ) and as I am not going to be using subs with it felt the WMR offered a bit flatter shooting and more poke for vermin. I imagine I’ll keep it 12 months and then move her on, can’t see me losing money on it except on RFD fees and ammunition.

Its not the rifle that fires the ammo , its the ammo . If i personally had to get either a HMR or a Mag RF ? 100 % iactia would go .22mag . 17 HMR gave various results in the bullets themselves some exploded practically and others drilled a neat hole like a FMJ and that wasn't always the range .
Many will already know that the plan for the HMR was to take a massive chunk of the .22 lr market making it an absolute goldmine ( one that re-filled itself) to do that they needed to take a massive chunk of the .22 rf market . Not rifle market BUT AMMO MARKET remember ! That was the idea- it failed as folks did not stop using the .22 they already had and the crucial thing was and still is .22 is way cheaper to make and sell so it didn't even make a massive dent in 22 sales . A shooter who already had a .22 carried on shooting it and they remained out there as has the ammo !
The challenge now is who is going to win the 22RF none Toxic race .

The .22LR in subsonic is a fantastic tool for quiet jobs, it is also the cheapest firearm (excluding FAC air rifles) to practice with. However, like a .410” shotgun, beginners start with it despite that it is really an expert’s tool. Loopy trajectory and a slow non-frangible lump of lead. The .17HMR (which I also have) is probably my favourite gun, but the ammunition situation is now laughable and compromises its use. In a semiautomatic feed and extraction reliability is much more important than accuracy. If you need accuracy use a bolt action in a different chambering!

I have a CZ512 semi-auto.

I bought it for a specific job and used it with CCI Gamepoint out to 120 on Bunnies with add on NV. Shoots about 1.5 MOA with Gamepoint so didn’t bother trying anything else. The ability to stay in the aim and drop 2 or 3 in quick succession is a bonus too. Takes 5 and 10 shot CZ mag. Reliability is great with this round - needs a clean about 60-80 - but as you can strip it if you have a10p, it’s not a major issue.

Fun on steel too.

Lots of AR types about if that’s your thing, but at the price the CZ’s are SH, a definite bargain.

Mine is a bit redundant now as I pretty much cleared out the rabbits. May consider moving it on. Drop me a PM if interested.

I have a Ruger Precision in .22wmr

I had an extra slot for a rimfire so gave it a try
It’s superb. 35gr ballistic topped at over 2200fps

Easily deals will foxes out to 100mtrs and puts the ***** up crows who think they are out of range
Turns out it’s a properly useful addition to my .22lr

Semi auto would be so much fun you’d need a bank loan for ammo though

i dont think the 22LR is anything like an experts tool regards use . Using CCI velocitors especially easy a 40 grain bullet HV round. Out 100yard zero head shots are easy enough for most skill levels, windages are the same as the std 22 subsonic as its still a 40 grain lead and its flat enough within that window ( though you can take it further). The better Subsonic 40 grain offerings can be shot very accurately with premium ammo and a shooter that can call wind can go a good bit more than 100 and My best group shot under range conditions put 8 shots through one bullet sized hole. I didn't miss with the other two in the ten shot mag i put them in the sand with a spotter watching , i thought i had a fault and gone " off paper " . I wonder to this day if i had shot those last two at target " would i get that 10 shot 100 yard screamer group ?" That was the old Lapua , the ones that had a picture of a rat on the box ! I used to Know a member of the British shooting team who competed at world level and she used to travel to Germany to test and buy Large batches of the lot number that shot best . Prone with the addition of a scope but only when ammo selecting .
Lapua have actually launched a long range RF subsonic and and an extra long range one also , talking little biddy sub MOA groups hundreds of yards out .
Big difference with a good rifle and premium ammo in a good bolt gun and bulk 22 ammo and a good bolt gun

Bit of a resurrection, apologies, but should anyone stumble across this, and I accept it’s not a semi auto, but the Begara BMR in .22 WMR is very impressive for the money. Accurate, nice trigger and decent stock. Contrary to some drivel spouted an excellent all round small vermin cartridge in my so far limited experience.

WMR semi autos are often significantly heavier than their .22LR cousins
Many of the parts need to be much chunkier and steel instead
The cycling of the "magnum" rimfire is much more emphatic and made short work of the internals of some of the earlier semi autos and AR15 style conversions

I also wouldn't take a semi auto for anything requiring precision
great fun but a decent bolt gun beats them all day long

my Sako zeroed at 100m with Remington Accutip is a ragged hole
You will struggle to get that out of a Semi
