.223 for roe (Scotland)

We use a .222 and Its fantastic It drops them pretty quickly, the only thing I would say is there's pretty horrendous bloodshot If one goes behind the shoulder or hits the leg bone.
Top of the scapula minimises that pretty well, there's not much damage.

If you shoot them through the lower shoulder, or think you hut them in the leg anyway larder them instantly and skin.

That's horrendous
I would definitely be changing to a different bullet.
What were you using?

I have really urban both with public and houses type permission so I dont want something monolithic style going thru and ricochet to god knows where so because of my circumstances I use 53grn vmax
I generally lose 34 of mest between ribs on both sides but 80% of shoulders i get so meat damage acceptable and very accurate

Sako Gameheads 55's

I've never had one this damaged since It seems like the bullet hut the elbow (Upwards shot) and exploded and sent bone shrapnel everywhere, I dont think Its a great example of the ammunition

Same ammunition but just rib bit further back due too wind drift, I do find if I shoot them in the shoulder crease there's a lot more bloodshot I however still mentally cannot get it out my head to not aim there the one my mate shoots high shoulder are pretty clean with it, he aims about where that nice white bone line is on the shoulder

Makes more sense now knowing that the bullet had taken a fancy to an awkward trajectory. 👍

The main reason I used the Barnes TTSXs was for the reduction in meat loss.

I've found the 69gr Sierra TMKs perfectly acceptable though and I end up just using these for everything.

I’ve seen this covered before but not for some time now just wondering if anyone still uses .223 for roe and with what ammunition?
Apologies in advance if this is a silly question
Reason im asking is the farm I shoot on has a few houses doted around and would like to keep the noise down as much as possible notice the .223 is much quieter that the .243
Well there are better and worse performances on Moderators and their use is more important than any other factor on noise . I Have shot CWD and Muntjac in England plus Roe in Scotland ( using a moderator ) It works fine , lets say , and " about as noisy as a .22 HV RF without a mod . When you add a bore specific large moderator of good design in say .243 win is a good bit less again .
I have used mainly Barnes tTSX 50 grain and The same with the ECX Hornady copper is about the same in 223 rem . The .243 I run 80 grain tTSX ( a new purchase ) with the also new Wildcat mod I will perhaps set up the .223 rem more when foxing .
The best choice for your quietness is the .22 hornet / moderated BUT UNFORTUNETLY its not legal for any UK deer , Such a shame really Acording to the old guys and my personal experience with the .22 hornet on fox . Half the powder than a .222 thereabouts ( I HAVE FAILED TO FIND .22 HORNET THAT CAN SHOOT ) However I Think A 17 Hornet Moderated Might be worth a look but again not legal for deer

I’ve used quite a few different bullets for whitetail here in the US shooting 223 and prefer the 77TMK and 75 black tip from Hornady that’s sold as a component.

Used a .22-250, .223 and .222. All 50-55 grains.

Settled on the .222 in the end and it seems to shoot 50 grain better than 55. Norma did a really nice soft point but discontinued it in the .222. The sako stuff shoots fine but just not quite as well for me.

Anyway, .223 will work fine within sensible distances. There’s not a lot to a roe deer weight wise
