.223 vs 5.56 twist rates

Do you mind telling me what rifles you got in 1:10 and your friend in 1:7.5? I've only seen 1:12 and 1:8

Mine is a Remington , 26 inch heavy barrel. Mark's 1:7.5 is a remi with a custom 30 inch barrel. I think it was built by Mik of Dolphin guns .
Two of my friends have the Tikka TX 3 with varmint barrels 1:8( might have got that model wrong) probably one of the most accurate out of the box rifle you can buy. good luck

Interesting. They've never shot anything but maybe MOA in mine. Perhaps they tightened up the twist slightly(?)

And I assume you mean 75gr ELDM (Hornady doesn't make a 77gr ELDM to my knowledge. Sierra makes a 77gr but though...)

8 twist will shoot 80.5 grain Berger F/B as well as 69 grain SMK's and all stations in between, in my Tikka M595 223.......it does have a 30" barrel, though.

Sorry yes 75gr typo here sadly. Sub moa at 500 is not difficult. Sadly I can’t achieve this every day my aging body on the odd occasion fails to perform

Weight with a .224 bullet is a bit misleading, so I making this post to point this out (not specifically at your post per se).

Polymer nosed bullets require a faster twist, since it makes them longer for their weight. People should bear that in mind. For 1-8 twist .223 barrels, 75gr bullets is the point where it matters whether they have a polymer nose of not. Also bear in mind, rarely are barrels exactly 1-8 twist; it's usually something close, but almost never exactly the case. Hence why some barrels will shoot a certain bullet with a 1-8 twist, and others with a 1-8 twist will not. Stability falls off quickly (especially at long range) when sitting at the hairy edge.

I don’t think I’ve ever come across a .233 with a 30” barrel. Does it give you any advantages?

I never seen a factory anything but a shotgun with a long tube like that.

It's a "semi-custom". It was originally intended for use as a TR, single shot, with aperture sights, (and jacket and sling...). There were a few made in the early 90's, I believe, but I don't know if they caught on.
TR rifles are generally 7.62x51/308 cal.
I bought it 10 years ago for the barrelled action, because it had been built using a brand new Tikka M595, and had only fired 40 or 50 rounds. I had it throated to load the 80gn SMK's long (MV 900m/s+), and it's been huge fun, even at 1000yds, which is where the long barrel advantage comes in. It's had a few thousand rounds through it since, and it'll still shoot sub 0.5 MOA groups.
There's a pic of it in the "show us your custom rifle" thread. It's presently in an old Anschutz walnut stock.
