22LR Barrel Length

I suppose it’s down to personal preference as to what you intend on doing with the rifle.
I have a cz 457 lrp which has a 20” barrel. I’m very happy with it, and it has a huge scope on it. Making it very heavy and solid on the bench. I wouldn’t want to take it hunting though. For that a nice 14-16” with a smaller scope would be better

I have a 20 inch American 455 22rf, up to 100yds shoot rabbits head and neck shots really a reliable gun with rsw, norma subs, should i cut the barrel down to 16 inch, no would not take the risk, wonder how the long range 22rf shooters think.

Cz452 done to 12.5 " so one thread job above legal length ....
Was great truck gun . Brilliant in a hide and worked out to more than my shooting ability
Wished I hadn't sold it

Just to put a spanner in the works, if cutting the barrel down increases the velocity, isn't there a risk you will get more supersonic cracks off close to the limit "sub sonic" ammunition?

David.

I would say that the speed of the bullet should be adjusted by the choice of ammunition, and not by slowing the bullet down inside a longer barrel.

Problem is that certain rifles will shoot just about anything supersonic. Tight chamber might be number one contributor. So basically no choice in ammunition.

I have a slot for a 22 on my ticket and will be looking to fill it soon. I’ve see loads of different barrel lengths on these, anywhere from 14” up to 24”.

Will you lose much accuracy on a shorter barrel if only used at relatively short range for pest control?
The barrel length does not affect accuracy nearly as much as one would expect. It's pretty nuanced and more complex than simply saying that a longer barrel equals better accuracy. For pest control up to 100 meters, I think any length of barrel would be sufficient to be fair. The main effects on accuracy will probably be ammunition choice and optic.

I read a report stating that although the powder is completely burnt in around 14"-16" and the bullet is slowed down in the remainder of the barrel, the extra length can help stabilise the bullet speed and make it more consistent. This was in the context of extreme accuracy target shooting.

How this reflects on the type of shoot you are carrying out might be very small. Any benefit of this may not be seen or even needed if you are shooting rabbits at 50yds or even steels at 300yds.

Op has probably got sorted since he posed that question 2 years ago! 😘

Come in Frithy and tell us what you did.
Cheers, Ken.

Really odd. Why does the forums show random ancient posts inbetween new ones?

This was pretty near the top (inbetween posts for only a day or so ago) when i clicked it!!!

Sometimes, somebody will google something of interest to themselves and these older threads get brought up.
Google is often better to search with than the SD search function
Ken.
