Hi all

Thinking about loading to try a subsonic load in both Calibers above .

Anyone used or tried any and what was the load data

Matt

Hey Matt - there is a 277 Wolverine developed as a subsonic cartridge. I think you'll struggle to get a 270Win subsonic safely. Drop me a line and we can catch up if you're home.

I've got some Viht N310 and 150gr bullets. I'll have a go at some 270 Win subsonic loads on the weekend and let you know how I get on.

I'm using 3.2gr N310 with 120gr cast bullets and CCI450 primers in my 6x45 for about 980fps. Great fun for plinking in the back garden.

The french company Sologne have subsonics in both calibres.
I dont know what they would cost there if you can find them, but here they are expensive. Their recommended retail price is around 60 euros for 20.
Here is a clipping from their catalogue.View attachment 86089

Hi Ileso

Thank you for the Sologne extract - I will have a root around next over the water in a couple of weeks.

Subsonic .270 Win is hard to do. Many years ago I had a go at it, and finally managed it (barely) with the aid of kapok as a filler between powder and bullet. The case has too much capacity, and without the filler you could (I did) stick a bullet in the barrel if you shot at a downward angle and the reduced powder charge got too far away from the primer.

I am now looking at having another go, but this time I will out a 6.8 spc barrel on my Colt HBAR. Should be able to make to work with a smaller case.

Tried a load of trail boss in .243 dose quieten it down .
Done couple batches today 15-14-13-12 grn loads

what do reloading manuals say on the subject?

and on another note, why the interest in a subsonic load? is there any gain in a hunting situation apart from the reduced recoil?

My personal interest was in vermin control while deer hunting. I had a rather large farm to hunt that I gained access to by providing control of beaver and predators. Invariably, always at the best spot and best time for deer - a bit of vermin would wander or swim by. An unmoderated .270 was usually enough to **** down any further activity after the first shot.

Why would you want to go subsonic - what advantage does it give you? Genuinely interested, although I stick to what the books tell me and normal loads, but curious anyway.

Hi,
I tried loading .243 Win. subsonic.
8 grains Trail boss and 100 grain bullet is subsonic, any more is supersonic.
At 100 yards i could pick the bullets off the backstop with only the soft point slightly distorted, only other marks were from the rifling.
Hodgdons data for .243 Win. is all for 100 grain bullets and 8 to 16 grains of TB.
Ken.

I like to shoot with my rifle in the back garden offhand for practice. My subsonic rounds are a lot cheaper and quieter than the supersonic ones I use for hunting.

I'm not interested in subsonic CF rounds for hunting - waste of time IMO.

Just a word of caution, I have a subsonic load for my .308 which has its occasional uses but is terrible for ricochet. 200gr lump whizzing off in to the wide blue yonder is not good.

I've had the same with a 120gr 6mm bullet bouncing off a newly planted field - quite a noise!

Maybe try a .30 bullet that is designed to expand at subsonic veolcities?

The offerings from Lehigh Defense (sic), Maker, USCP, CEB, etc. will do just that but would be difficult to obtain from the States. The Nosler 220gr BT is AFAIK the only one to date from a mainstream manufacturer and might be easier to source over here - Spud1967 said he could obtain them but I haven't as yet ordered any.
