243 with named mentor

Hi Iah
The mentor that is named on my ticket is the manager of the syndicate of which i am a member , i could cross his palm with silver and get anything signed . .I did a pre dscl1 day last sat with Jon Snowdon ,he also runs stalking days / courses but with a named mentor it stops me booking days with Jon and any one else for that matter . As for confrontational with plod , ! The lancs firearms manager who was the one i spoke to had the attitude of a bagged up teenager and he even put the phone down on me ! Incidently he told me i had untill today to sort it out as he his leaving that position , pushed i hope .

Paul

hi your try the BDS north west granch for your DCL1 i took my with them they have a great team to who i now go out stalking with etc PM me if you wont more details or to talk .

i did 2 days with jon snowdon in feb this year never again

Paul, if you believe that the soon to be redundant FLO has been objectional, don't get into a slanging match but you have every right to report him to the Chief Constable. Again don't be confrontational, be very factual you may be pleasantly surprised, especially as he will be pushing the FLO to clear his desk before he goes and won't want the hassle of perpetuating the issue.
I once had a FLO get bolshy with my ex-partner when we were going for variations (she had a FAC too). I wrote to the boss man & in two days we got our variations approved. - Funny coincidence that!

My County does the same thing its all down to the interpratation of the "guidance" by the Cheif Inspector well his legal advisors and in my experience they will not budge; My example ex MOD of 16yrs, RCO, Qualified Home Office Approved Club training offcer, clay shooting safety officer, clay shooting coach and ref, pest controller having on open ticket on a .223 for foxing and a .308 for target shooting, qualified meat inspector and I did my DSC1......... When applying for a variation had to have a mentor for my .243 for deer stalking!! Mind blowing.....BASC....that should never be the case.........I asked plod if I request for a variation for the .243 to shoot fox what would you say ??? not a problem sir .....you would still need a mentor if you wanted to shoot deer with it though, Bonkers!!

My mentor was very sinical in his letter explaining he had just mentored the same gentleman who had trained him and decleared him safe to shoot on MOD ranges!!

How ridiculous, or is it? To have a mentor strikes me the applicant for a centre fire rifle has had little or no experience. I would have thought we would see it as a reasonable request from the FLO to insist an inexperienced shooter had at least a level of instruction in the first instance. I see little objection in these circumstances, but the correspondent gives the impression he/she is an experienced shot, in which case mentoring is ridiculous, and not implemented in other areas.
Perhaps we should bear in mind the established management in Lancashire is about to change from those in the 'know' to be managed by uniform staff. Make the most of it while you can chaps!

Mark,

That is totally bonkers! Exactly the reason they should read and apply the HO Guidance - each application must be considered on it's own merits and 'blanket policies' should not be applied - no need for any 'interpretation', it's in there in black and white. Are you saying that BASC commented but didn't want to get involved?

BASC did comment and gave me a draft letter to send in. It was OK but life has taught me to jump through hoops. My FAC did come back on signing off as a full open for all calibres including the .308 for deer and fox. There may have been some reflection perhaps......!

Thats wright mate Lancashire police can do that. I no some body with lanc's force who put in there 243 and he new some one level 2 trained etc an esseser he put him for the stalker who wood monitor him when came back they gave him another name who he had to go with he was gutted cause ment more travel in, he did question it with them but had no sucsess.

If they are going to apply an arbitrary condition, such as mentoring by a named individual, they should at least give you a chance to nominate the mentor! To do otherwise is utterly ridiculous. Of course they can then decide the person is "not a suitable person" but then they would need to justify that decision.

Interesting ...... I have never heard of this before and don't think it exists up in the North.

Where exactly in the Home Office Guidelines does it mention "mentor"? Sounds like another local rule to which we are being forced down.

Give them and inch they take a mile.

Ever get the impression the **** is being extracted
However on the flip side I have recently been approached by a guy who has never shot before stating:

"I have got a brand new .243, but not really that sure what I need to do next"? So I am currently sitting on the fence on this at the moment for those who are TOTALLY NEW to our world!

My new retail business will be selling rifles, but along with that comes FREE SAFETY advice and guidence, the offer of FREE supervised range use, zeroing, barrel break- in and cleaning proceedures.
RFD's IMHO, have a duty of care towards the buyer and the public.

I can understand and agree in some cases why the police are pushing for people to have mentors but in other cases I feel its a total waste of time depending on the person.
I had one guy who nominated me then the fao then called me to see if I was willing of course I said yes.
he was a complete newbie to rifles and I had to mentor him on a .22 lr in his case I completely agreed with the fao he had no understanding of rifle safety or backstops etc. My two other guys had been shooting longer than me but the reason given why they needed mentoring was experience was lacking in the field.

Thanks guys for all your advice , ive met up with George Wallace at the weekend , had a long chat with him , he is going to write to lancashire this week and ask for the named mentor to be removed . I n the meantime ive got my dscl1 booked for mid july . So there might be some daft questions i need to ask the more experienced of you out there ,

Will keep you posted how i get on ,
Thanks again Paul
