25-06 barrel length?

I had a Rem Sendero in .25-06 26" barrel and super accurate with 100gr, 110,115,117 and 120 bullet weights but a big lump to cart about with a mod on so sold it for something a bit slimmer.

I have both 25/06 & .260Rem , like them both equally, the .260 shades the 25/06 in projectile selection.
The 25/06 was built on a MARK X Mauser Action & fitted with a Douglas Premium Air Gauge Barrel 22" long, some of the older forum members may recall that Douglas used to offer a barrel profile that was not much larger than in diameter at the muzzle as your little finger. This rifle was fitted with a Canjar Tang safety & Buehler tip off mounts, Leupold 2-7 & weighed a tad over 6 pounds.
I was never concerned about velocity and settled on a load of 50 grains of Dupont 4831 with Sierra 120 grain HPBT projectiles.

palmer mike i have just ordered one, it arrived in two weeks but does not come threaded, its being done now.i ordered the tikka t3 supervarmint in 25-06 having a 18x1 thread in a 22"barell length

I'm currently thinking of getting a 25-06 and the rifle I'm looking at comes in either 20" or 22.5" barrel

im erring of the side of getting the longer barrel, but it might involve a wait as it may be a special order (not investigated this fully yet). In theory would the 20" barrel lose a lot in terms of performance over the 22.5"?

not really worried about the weight or extra length of the longer barrel, just concerned about performance.....

I'm in the long barrel camp -and I get excellent results with IMR4831
I wonder if EJG has shot a quarter bore? I'm sure his 7mm is fab and dandy, even at range but the .25-06 has put a lot of meat on the table especially north of the border so who gives a hoot how far up the tree another round can pee!
Palmer-mike - if you fancy something different go for it and have an enjoyable time too.

I've been shooting a .25-06 with a 22" barrel for fifteen years now and it's more than capable of taking all legal quarry in the UK right up to the biggest stags.
My usages are with 100gn Sierra Prohunter IMR4350 & 110gn Accubond bullets using IMR4831. I run both at max velocities because I believe velocity is king in a .25-06.
I've had my current rifle for 12 years and it's had around 2000 rounds through it. It's still as accurate as when new...; but then, I don't shoot it until it gets hot.
There are other perfectly good cal/cartridge combinations out there, but for a sweet running, low recoil, accurate, high velocity round...a .25-06 is on the money.

I have had two 25/06's first one with a 23" barrel was a disappointment velocity wise not any better than a 257 Roberts but it killed animals great, the second one I still have was built on a Rem 700 action with a custom fluted 26 1/2" barrel , This one really performs 87 gr Bergers 3600fps 100gr Hornady 3400fps 115 Berger VLD 3182fps the 115's are still doing over 2100fps at 500 metres, it's not my goto hunting rifle I have a 7-08 and a 9.3x62 for that, but if I want to show off I get it out impresses the hell out of those that have shot it, sort of like shooting a laser,

If I were you I'd buy that Sako 75 and save up the cash for a good 26" barrel it is well worth it you could be disappointed with anything less I was. Robert.
