Just starting out with a sako 85 in .260 cal what ammunition to start with for reloading for fox dr and target shooting. any help would be appreciated before i buy loads of stuff i dont need.

i had a 260 for years before i saw the light and got a creedmoor (lol) i used the 140 amax and later the 140gr ELD-M , factory for the 260 is a case of take what you can find as it isn't a fabulously popular round

for just fox you could try the 95gr vmax ?

I have a 6.5-08 which is basically the .260 before it was called .260.
For target use I reload with 142 SMKs, they work really well at a modest speed, and out to 1000m, with (unfortunately) H4831SC.

Now that powder has stopped being sold, when I use up my meagre supply I will need to find an alternative, so I'm watching this thread with interest.
I'll keep using this 142gn bullet as it just works, I'm sure many of the other heavier 6.5 bullets will do the job just as well, but I know the Sierra will function from a magazine with a quite sizeable jump.

I haven't yet found any factory loads to try, but I've not really looked.

Target. Lapua 139 Grain scenar using N160 (RS 60 was a bit destructive on the barrel)
Deer (Not such good results with Copper (127 gn Barnes LRX is ok). I use 243 cases to make the brass

I will be interested to see what comes up on this one as I have just started this journey myself with a TRG22, it will be for target as I am not carrying that around too far, car to firing point!

Currently after research and asking about l am thinking 139 scenars and Vit, we shall see. Although I think SPUD1967 does do some mixed bullet boxes so you get to try likely contenders out without buying 100's, that could an option when time allows.

I have a couple of 260`s. Great cartridge. Will shoot most bullets very well. I have a 24inch AE3 and use 136scenars with 43gn N555 (Viht data) at targets out to 1250yds. Have used 123/139 scenars too along with N150/N160/N165/Hunter/Big game. Tried most of the Hornady variants and the Sierra 130gn TMK. They all shoot well. I form the brass from 308 GGG

I’ve got two, fantastic chambering. For target I use 139 scenars and 140 SMK’s. For deer I’ve used the 130gr tipped game king and it’s very accurate and effective. It’ll be good on foxes. I’ve got some copper to try next, various types between 100 and 124 grain. As mentioned, N160 is a great powder for the .260 especially in the 130 - 140 bullet range.

RS60 behind a 110gn Virtus Merlin has been good for me for Red, Roe and a few Fallow. Only shot one very unlucky fox with it but shot quite a few hares and it did a good job on them so can’t imagine foxes would be an issue.
