.270 flinch--itus

I reckon a mod is needed overall-- recoil is harsh by anyones standards and although it has "character" its so damned loud i fell like posting "sorry" cards through all the cottages within 3 miles
Felt recoil, and ill fitting stocks...I once bought a T3 30-06, laminate or wood stock, but standard stainless hunter thing. Even though it had a huge MAE stainless mod on it, that thing kicked the stuffing out of me, and was quickly moved on to a "forever home"(I hope).

I have found the best way to overcome the tendency to flinch is to try and watch where the bullet impacts. That ensures I stay on target for the entire process and (in my case) overcomes any tendency to flinch which I can say would happen if i was to just take a quick shot.

I was on the range yesterday next to a chap with a moderated .243, I nearly fell over when he switched to his .300 Win Mag with a muzzle brake without me noticing!
Yep, fondly recall being on a bench at Bisley with my lightweight 22 Hornet atop a front bag when the chap to my right sent something similar down range via a muzzle brake. The pressure moved the Anschutz forend & barrel across to the next target frame!

Happy days

If your main gripe is it's volume and snappy nature look for a mod with a bit of weight on it, ase utra are pretty solid lumps and worth a look, sl5i/sl7i

I've got a 24" heavy barreled .270 with a big predator 12 mod on it, pussycat to shoot

I have a BSA CF2 in .270. Very similar in style/weight etc to your rifle.

I don’t suffer from flinching but can definitely suffer from overthinking when I’m trying to zero. It’s like getting 2 touching shots and not wanting make a mess of the group with the 3rd.

When I’m shooting deer I never consider or register the recoil, or the noise.

Having said all that I’d love to hear how you get on with a moderator.

Ive got an ase on my 243. Does a grand job

I have an ASE SL5i on my 270, but it's a 22" heavy barrel Tikka in a PSE Multipurpose stock. It's about 11 ½lbs. It's a joy to shoot running lighter copper, and very bearable running 135gr lead (just a target load for wee local comps).

Similar occurrence at Atholl range once, tinging a round or two (.222 rem) carefully at the target, next firing point was meantime taken by a chap with a large rifle. Muzzle brake too…
One bang from it and the earth moved, for me!

Talk about giving a body a flinch! ‘Whit’s that ye’re sheeting?’ I enquired after he’d came reasonably near to each of the four drawing pins on the A0 target, and making more impression on the local seismometer than the deer silhouette;

“It’s a 7mm Remington Magnum”, he said. “- Even if you hit it in the back leg, it’s dead”….

Needless to say, no legs, on paper or otherwise were injured during the exercise,, and he retired from the firing point shortly thereafter, somewhat shaken…

After forgetting i had removed the scope and then refitted it into rings months back i took the .270 out and had this particularly unimpressive result!! first shot was above the back, no worries i thought its needing adjusted --so adjusted scope to fix and had the next 3 tidy shots but then ooooh dear, out at 100 yards ,well, see piccy.:rolleyes:I have the 8x56 schmitt bender on so pinpoint at 100 is not expected but holy lederhosen batman this was baaad.I conclude i have contracted flinchitus .Either that or my scope is naff. Anyways i posted so those of us that are honest enough to admit we are not demigods know it alls can have a laugh at my expense and perhaps realise.when they browse for advice on bad groupings its not just them that fluffs it . p.s unmoderated monarch and the noisiest bugger on planet earth

Unmoderated rifle off sticks - without a fair bit of practice, it’s going to be a bit wild.

I shot an unmoderated .270 for years, and I’m reasonably recoil shy.

If you have a rifle that fits you well, and hold the fore-end firmly, it’s not a problem at all.

But you do need to concentrate to technique. The moment you start treating it like a moderated .243, it will start spraying rounds everywhere.

I'll own up to missing clean over the top with my 270 off sticks, simply by not taking a grip of the forend.

I really don't get the not holding the forend. The barrel flip from my .30-06 would be ridiculous without it. However luckily no second shot required normally! 6.5x55 barrel lovely to shoot but I haven't got it as accurate as the boomer yet, need to try different ammo.

It probably comes from too much prone shooting and shooting smaller cartridges. Lesson very much learned.

Hmmm.
As late as today I was at the range - moderated 6.5x55SE brilliant to shoot, .308 moderated same - an absolute pleasure.
Then moved to the unmoderated Big Boy’s 8mm Mauser with 198gns bullets.
Let’s just say the pattern became a tad “loose”.
Either get a moderator or go down to the 6.5 - moderated.
