.270

So far all the replies have been great!

What's the normal price for a tikka .270 (t3) new then? I don't want to spend a vast ammount on the entire set up.

Rifles seem so expensive compaired to a shotgun say at 50 quid which will do the same job as a new beretta

  , Comparing shotguns in that way to rifles is like saying a catapult is just like a longbow, seriously though, take your time & have a really good look around, you'll get what your'e looking for, Steve.

Haha yeah there is a slight difference between the two! Think I'll just start phoning around local gun shops to see what's going.

Is it fair to say that you'll buy a rifle second hand providing that you take it to your gunsmith first and he says the barrel and everything is ok?

To be honest, very few people actually wear out a rifle barrell these days other than the hard core target or varminting guys and neither of these are too likely to be using .270's. In the same way as you would buy a second hand car, look for other evidence of hard use or abuse. Rust, bluing worn off the barrell and bolt knob, stock battered, muzzle all shiny from being in and out of slips thousands of times etc. I would buy stainless if you possibly can. Most of all, if you find a weapon that you like and feel comfortable with, either new or secondhand, get it bought and go out and start using it. As with all equipment, buy the best quality you can. If getting a Sako over a Tikka means finding another couple of hundred pounds then so what, the quality will last long after the credit card bill has been forgotton. JC

Just bought a new Tikka 695 Continetal .270 yesterday. It was brand new on the dealers shelf and has been sat there for the last few years. Wooden stock, semi beaver tail forend and heavy barrel.
Not screw cut but will get that done. Paid under £600 with 60 Norma 110g V-Maxs thrown in too...

Good quality rifle for not a lot of wonga.

Thanks for the input!

Yeah I'm fairly sure I'll go for a T3 if I can find out what they normally go for,(some of the gunshops locally have some silly prices!). What would you guys be looking to pay for one? I wouldn't mind giving a local buisness a few quid more but not a few hundred

continental shooting, great guys, great gear, great service, oh! and a great caff too! We always try to fit in a visit with these people when up over the border. Steve. :-D

Its a wee trip to go just for a cup of coffee

On a different note, how highly do you rate the new browning X bolt? a better choice than a tikka T3? cheaper?

Apologies for the forty questions. Just trying to buy right first time !

If i was in your shoes I would buy the X-bolt. I have owned a T3 and did not like it at all, felt horrible, hollow plastic stock, awful trigger among other things. The x-bolt is no dream but i think it is a much better gun than the T3. Handles and feels nice, good magazine etc.

It seems the T3 is built down to a price, but at £650 ish i can think of better things to buy i.e x-bolt, Remmington 700, used Sako or Sauer etc.

Thanks! I was thinking that at least the xbolt will deafinarrly come screw cut aswell! What would you prefer then; x bolt or Remington classic?

I have to say that,(and this is a complete assumption so could be totally wrong!) that the vast ammount of aftermarket parts available for the Remington would suggest to me that it needs plenty adjustment after you purchase?

I bought a Remi 700 VLS from Eddy off here and it's a joy to use, no recoil, no muzzle flip, trigger is about 1lb pull and i like light triggers. THere are no after market parts fitted to it and i would change it for the world.
Really nice gun to use and i would purchase another.

Go for the X-Bolt, but do it quick as things have a certain habit of price rises if you dont hurry up and buy it. Stick a Jet-z or T8 on it and a 8x56 scope and you have a combination for any situation in the UK for any Deer.

retail is around £320 but you can buy them cheaper , just have to look around or have a RFD as a mate!
