3 rifles for FAC app. Fox/Vermin only

Hello All,

I hope your all well and had a good weekend so far.

I am applying for FAC over spring once I've moved into my new gaffe cannot unfortunately have them where I currently live.

I was thinking 22RF vermin only, 22 WMR for vermin/fox on small holdings and 22-250 fox & vermin for larger places, open fields etc

Largest place I currently have is about 100 acres
Next largest is 45 acres, but has wide open field on one spot 25 acres and up in the hills.

I was just wondering if 223 would be a better option than 22-250 not to stir up a hornets nest just want people's advice and thoughts

I have a farmer friend who uses a 22-250 to very good effect and swears by it.

If it was me i would go with 22LR , 223 ( if you wont be doing any deer ) then 243 win instead . You see the 22LR is good for a big range of uses inside say 150 range . 223rem will do anything but handy caped by not being all uk deer legal ! 243 on the other hand can do all UK deer and can be all UK deer , with the lighter bullets its almost a 22-250 but the 243win goes 55 grain up in stages up to 100 grain !
Now everyone needs a 22LR! stuff the WMR as its over price to feed and not widely stocked . The 22LR has lots of different loads in its range and its cheap to feed , brilliant for Rabbits to fox and such and everyone should have one for

I did opt for 22lr in the end a nice used cz 452/455/453 or old Brno will do me,

cost of fac air was eye watering for some of the high end models with buddy bottles new and used I mean they do look good Daystate non electronic versions Blackwolf really caught my eye or the FX crown/king.

I did look at 223 I mean the rifle choices new or used is vast ammunition available anywhere in the UK and varied.

22-250 with it's wind bucking abilities w/ increased velocity over 223 and 20-30%? More downrange energy won it over for me in my choice on 22 CF

Yes for sure ammo choice with 22lr is vast subs, hi velocity hollow points, stingers/yellow jackets etc very versatile in this regard.

I will look at an all deer legal CF in the future 6.5/270/308

point is / was the 243 can imitate a 22-250 using light bullets 55 grain and similar , then put 90,95, the100 grain 243 can still play with all the Large and small species of deer in the UK .
Personally it took me a while of buying swapping guns about for about 30 years. That's without talking RF and Airguns .
Good shooting along the path you take

If it’s your first FAC it will almost certainly not be an open FAC. They will want to know details of the land you have permission to shoot on as part of your good reason to hold an FAC. That will then lead them to ask for what calibres the land has been cleared at which point they will probably tell you what calibres you can have. Bizarre I know but I think that is how it will go.

For sure definitely it is very versatile the 243 one rifle both uses I did think of it, but it's just a shame that will end it really due to non lead for 243 using it both fox & deer, I think only Winchester makes a 55gr lead free loading

unless other manufacturers comes up with say another 55/60gr frangible monolithic in 243 I think some folk might go back to having 2 different ones 22cf/20cal and deer legal cf,

Learned by experience what works, doesn't work 👍

Ta thanks very much bowland blades looking forwards to it all 👍

I enjoy sharing and learning on this forum and by no means come on here to make jabs about what ways are better but this whole paragraph made me break out in a sweat 😂

Don't worry about the WMR, just get the .22LR and a .223.

22-250 is great round but remember it's hard to get ammo for sometimes, and it's more expensive than .223.

In some areas it can be my local rfds stock it one of them does 50gr hornady vmax for £31,

another sells federal, hornady, ppu and Nosler in 22-250 plus another sells Winchester varmint X as well as the others I looked about what my local rfds stock,

Its on average couple pounds more a box than 223 or 204 factory, although some places I've seen sell 223 tipped factory loads for £35/38 box
