.303 on land passed for .270

and i would suggest that the police (having read this thread) are not qualified to grant 'clearance' anyway
Most of the FEOs I have dealt with have been shooters themselves, and pretty knowledgeable about firearms. One in particular was a very good source of advice for me when I was starting out.
I've only encountered two real numpties.

I had one shooting man & he was bloody brilliant. I asked if I could ask for him by name next time - he laughed saying "afraid not, ive only been doing it 6 months but im packing in next week - worst role of my life!" 😒

My FEO was excellent. I took him out stalking on my ground and he had to use my rifle as he had a closed ticket!! Cue one pi$$ taking!!
He too is no longer an FEO which is a real shame.

PPU do a .303 soft point factory round which is readily available.

You even can get a handloader kit for £25 and self load yourself super easy without having to buy any presses or does.
Really??? I have never seen PPU 303 soft point. Henry Kranks don't stock it and they are the PPU importers

Odd, I used to buy loads of 150grain soft point factory rounds, PPU when I had a .303 and they were decent and chronoed deer legal etc.

Unless I bought the PPU 174grainers, shot them for target at the club, and then used the brass and hand loaded the 150's in. It was so long ago.

The 150 grain soft point bullets though, are 100% PPU. I know this as I have them in the bag Infront of me.

Again, different forces doing different things 😞
A&S (thankfully) either clear land for rimfire (all calibres/chamberings) or centrefire (all calibres/chamberings)

So why are they losing ground? Not doing a good enough job? It's not like there's a shortage of deer, is it?
There are a lot of sharks out there.
I have cleaned up after pro stalkers have targeted trophies, leaving huge numbers of deer, but the farmer was initially wooed by a few notes.
Money talks until it doesn’t!!

Sometimes you just lose your one permission as farms get sold sadly. What’s worrying is that it seems like a trend now that the police are using it as an excuse to revoke or not renew, despite, guidance stipulating having your own permission isn’t required

I am still fairly new to deer stalking and just wanted to check views from people with experience with this.

I have put in a verification for a .303 with a deer condition (I know probably not the most practical deer calibre these days), I currently have a .243 with a deer condition and the land this was approved on is passed for .270 WIN but FL have told me that it needs to be passed for .303 as it's only passed for .270.
My understanding is that .270 is fast and higher energy so would have thought that .303 would be covered or do the police go on the bullet diameter rather than energy and range when approving land for calibres?
Had the same when I started and sent them a polite letter with ballistics of the two cartridges side by side showing that for the same bullet weight the numbers were higher on all accounts for the 270.

I had the variation retuned approved without any further questions.

Of course as others have already said, maybe it’s time for an open ticket if you’ve had your .243 for a while.

Lack of permission / land. Quite a few I’ve heard of have had issues with FAC renewal grants after having lost permissions.
I had that problem with my rimfires, our shoot changed hands just a couple of weeks before my renewal went in, I use them on the club range as well, so in the absence of a vermin permission Hants FLD has now restricted their use to target shooting. I suppose in looney land somewhere this makes sense to them, but there's absolutely nothing in the firearms act that having established one good reason the use is restricted solely to that purpose.

Dear Mr FEO

I currently have a 270 Win and use it on land cleared for the 270 Win. As I am sure you will appreciate is a fast flat shooting cartridge suitable for all British Deer. It typically shoots a 130 to 150 gn bullet at 2900 to 3100 feet per sec with 2,700 to 2,900 ft lbs of muzzle energy.

I would like to acquire a 303 calibre rifle for both target shooting and deer stalking. For the target shooting I am a member of xyz clubs.

For deer stalking i will use it for shooter ranges compared to the 270. 270 works very well at ranges over 100m. At shorter ranges and on smaller deer the 270 causes unnecessary carcass damage which is waste of good meat.

The 303 has substantially lower velocity and muzzle energy than the 270. With a typical 150 gn soft point bullet it has a mv of 2500 to 2600 fps and muzzle energy of 2,400 to 2500 ft lbs. The 308 win, which also widely used, especially by the likes of Forestry England for all deer management purposes is about 10% more powerful than the 303.

When it comes to 1st April 2028 and lead ammunition is prohibited from use I intend to use a copper hunting bullet - currently Fox, Barnes and others all off bullets for reloading and I understand will be offering loaded non toxic ammunition in 303 cartridge.

Given its lower energy levels I assume that land cleared for the 270 is suitable for the 303.

I am also increasingly being offered stalking opportunities elsewhere so please nicely can I have sn Open ticket so I can take advantage of such opportunities.

Love hugs etc.

I’ve had five or six 75 and 85s and a couple or three Tikkas before them. I’d never go back to a Tikka for the double stack mag and the controlled round feed on the 85. When you’re night shooting, you fairly regularly put a bullet up the spout and don’t fire it. On a tikka, you have to unload, find the round that’s pinged out, then take out the mag to put it back in and finally put the mag back in. On a Sako you just pull the bolt back slowly and press the round back into the mag. If I couldn’t afford a Sako, I’d buy a remmy 700 long before I’d buy a tikka. Had five or six of them too. Never had a bad one.

A graph showing retained energy bullet drop would demonstrate the information provided.

Won't comment on Love hugs etc...

I will give this a try. I have only had my .243 for a year, and FAC for just under 2 years, so I doubt they would let me have an open ticked but worth a try.
