.308 for Fallow & Roe

Factory:

Federal 150gr Powershok as a general purpose round. Cheap and effective, doesn't make too much of a hole, though can be a bit messy at shorter range if you hit a shoulder. Trajectory a bit like a brick.
Federal 150gr ballistic tip if I'm feeling fancy and might be shooting at slightly longer range. Very effective, cleaner carcasses than the soft points, somewhat flatter trajectory.

Home load:

168gr Hornady Eldm over 46.8gr of RS52. Extremely effective longer range round. A bit too savage for roe at close range, but very good on big fallow, red and sika.

However, I've shot all sorts of other .308 ammunition at roe and fallow, and I don't think there's really very much in it. At any even remotely sensible range, a .308 will emphatically kill both types of deer. The .308 is so common for a reason...

Sako 123gr Gamehead ammunition. Flat shooting, soft recoil, tight groups (in my Tikka T3) and works absolutely fine.

Sorry n135
Sierra 125 Prohunters are a fabulous bullet for all uk species. I use 47gnsxN140 (loaded long and crimped) without showing any pressure signs but beware - the latest Viht Guide shows 47gns as top end - now 43.2-47.2gns, go figure! It was a mid-range load when I started using it! Soooo - as ever your rifle will be different so start low and work up carefully until you find your perfect recipe.
Good luck.

150 gn sierra Gameking powered by Vhit N140.

Have been happy with performance on larger stuff like boar & reds down to muntjac. It levels all if you put it in the right place

I have an invite from a good friend in Sweden for moose and will be my chosen bullet for that trip.

I used to use the 123 gamehead but switched to the150 super hammerhead as found less meat damage. Probably due to being slightly slower.
Sako ammo seems to suit my mauser and blaser and tikka, and it groups excellent. Easy to get hold of.
Whatever you go with it's best checking on availability as you don't want to be constantly re zeroing the rifle

I found these a little dramatic with meat damage, and a few blew up on shoulders without penetrating very well.

This was from a 24” barrel. I imagine out of the shorter barrel on a T3, they’re probably a lot politer.

Very accurate indeed, though.
