.308 suggestions for stalking and range use.

Is an adjustable stock something that's worth considering?
Yes. A CTR comes with a picatinny rail built on. A good number of target scopes are wide objective so will sit high on the rifle, often around 2 inches above centre bore. An adjustable stock means you can set the cheekpiece so that your eye falls inline with the centre of the scope consistently as you mount the rifle. A good cheekweld is essential for accuracy, and you can of course achieve it with sleeves, comb-raisers and duct tape, but an adjustable height cheekpiece is a real boon in terms of looks and consistent repeatability.

I'll be following this thread quite closely as I'm essentially looking for the same thing. I did see good reviews of the Tikka and also someone recommended a Mauser M12 on another thread. However the M12 is just a silver barrel rather than the stainless of the Tikka CTR if you wanted a stainless version to go with the synthetic stock.

Is an adjustable stock something that's worth considering?
I put the tikka adjustable stock on my CTR and changed the trigger guard and magazine for plastic

I run a tikka Varmint in a KKC stock with a CTR mag conversion for the exact same thing
Great stalking rifle
Have shot targets to 1000 and beyond

Or this is a belting option:

Lots of good suggestions here. Your use seems similar to mine as I use my rifles for both the range and the field too.

The Tikka CTR is a good choice with cracking aftermarket accessories from the likes of PSE, and a cracking barrel. My custom started life as a CTR and when I eventually wore it out it was a cracking platform to slowly upgrade.

I’ve recently bought a Steyr SSG 69 similar to the one above and I plan on using it for the range and stalking too. Yeah it’s on the heavier side for stalking but it’s inherently accurate and confidence inspiring without being super heavy, and for me I’d rather lug the extra pound or two and have that confidence in the stability to know the round will go where I want it. And it’ll also do what you need it to out to good ranges with good availability of solid, cheap ammo.

@Dr. Strangelove also has a cracking SSG for sale too. I’d have ripped his arm off for it if I didn’t already have one!

Good luck in your search 👍🏻

Having started out with quite a fixed idea in mind of what I wanted, I have ended up with a Haenel Jaeger 10 Pro in .308. It's currently unmoderated and an incredibly light sporter with open sights (although I have mounted a scope). Basically, it's probably as far from where my thinking started as possible.

Obviously the Haenel's firing and handling characteristics are completely different from the type of rifle originally being considered in this post. It is very well balanced in the hand and more accurate than I am capable of being off sticks. It is however a bit of a 'jumper' with its recoil, unsurprisingly with a 20 inch barrel.

The Haenel is an absolute delight to carry. It doesn't have the weight of a mod messing with its centre of gravity so it stays where you put it on the shoulder. It is also a rifle you can carry all day without really noticing its weight.

All in, I'm very pleased with it and enjoying getting to grips with shooting unmoderated with a lightweight rifle. I haven't grassed a deer with it yet but that will happen in due course.

Ear defenders are definitely a must when shooting it!

I now feel a variation coming on to get another .308 on my ticket, possibly along the lines originally considered...

The Sako S20 Precision is a fantastic rifle for both field and range. I absolutely love mine. Mine shoots sub 0.5" MOA with deer legal factory ammo and it shoots sub 0.4" with SAKO TRG ammo. Just a fantastic rifle.
