6.5-284 Norma

So, midweek day dream, having seen a nice left handed remington in this calibre on gun trader....whats not to like about this calibre?

- Lighter recoiling but harder hitting than a .270, my current rifle
- fast so theoretically good with copper
- 6.5 good BC rounds.

the only problem I can see is availability of factory ammunition and the fact that I already have 6.5s in my cabinet

Sounds nice (in theory) but I doubt it will have any appreciable real world advantage over the 270.

I've been shooting 6.5-284 for about 20 years. Use mainly for shooting sika, roe and red on a recreational basis. I also shoot a 270 professionally on the same species. If i had the choice I would use the 6.5 only. Why?...... I can do accuracy wise at 500 metres what I can do with the 270 at 100m. That may be due to the difference between one set up and another. Most times with the 6.5 you can see the strike when shooting because there is less recoil

Advantage of the 270 is factory ammo availability. 6.5-284 is basically home load only which will prevent you shoot on the likes of fls land.

Shot 6.5-284 for four barrels worth of deer and target and only changed because the bolt is very worn and will not hold a Sako extractor any more (needs new bolt which is not cost effective to do )

I now use 284 win (just as effective , accurate and hard hitting)

6.5-284 is a superb cartridge for accurate engagement of target and killing humanely

Many boys running 7mmRM now, Sako make lead free for it although I suspect these rounds stay in the glove box...

It is a new 270. It shoot ok but not great

I have a 6.5 x 284 built on a Sako 75 action and it's the one rifle I would never sell, absolutely love this cartridge, very accurate, flat shooting and hard hitting. Yes it's a barrel burner if you shoot hot loads but so is a .243 under the same conditions.

Spookily enough I have have a 6.5x55 Sako 75 that is getting close to deeding rebarrelling ….ooh I think I see a way forward! Might have to start getting into reloading…double bubble!

Best out of a 26-24" barrel but NZ boys seem to like chopping them down to 20 odd inches!

7mmRM…I’ll have to investigate

I use a 7mm rm!! I also have a .270&6.5-284&.260 ackley and the 7mm by far hits harder and faster than any of the others but you will not see the strike but you don’t have to because it’s usually in a heap on the ground where you shot it the other calibres are more than capable and have no concerns taking any of them out

Ironically looking at going the other way 6.5x284 to 270, but this is being “driven” by the probable and rapid enforcement of lead alternatives. If lead based rounds were here to stay I would stay with 6.5.
If we consider from a handloaders aspect - 6.5x284 with a 120 TTSX will not match a 270 with a 110 TTSX for velocity and I imagine terminal effect (I admit yet to to actually use copper monoliths at 120 grain in the field).
Using 110 grain in a 270 will be akin to using a 25-06 in recoil terms. And the higher bc of the 120 grain 6.5 will be nullified by the fact that we will be not reaching out as far with copper monoliths ie using at sub 300-350 yards hence bc is pretty much irrelevant.

If you develop that argument you arrive at 110gr copper out of a 30-06 at even more velocity (and crap BC)
