6.5 Creedmoor banned on MOD ranges

I found this elsewhere from "One on top of two" moniker.

6.5 Creedmoor Users Please Note the Following:

URGENT AND IMPORTANT NEWSFLASH.

For those of you who use MOD Fixed Firing Ranges, particularly Wiltshire’s SPTA (Salisbury Plain Training Area) ranges (and most likely nationwide Military Fixed Firing Ranges).

With immediate effect, a ban on the use of 6.5 Creedmoor ammunition has been imposed. This ban has come from the top, Westdown Camp, who are responsible for safety on all MOD ranges across the UK, not just Wiltshire.

The issue appears to be with range safety and the use of 6.5 Creedmoor. ie this chambering exceeds the safety template of 7.62mm/308 Win by enough of a margin to be deemed unsafe for use on Fixed Firing Ranges.

When this ban came out (Thursday 26th) FCSA immediately informed NRA’s Nic Cauldry to seek clarification with MOD.

It is confirmed that the ban has been imposed. Furthermore, clubs and range users will need to acknowledge the ban (when other Training Areas bring it online) in writing, otherwise further range bookings will not be processed until said users have replied and acknowledged the restrictions on 6.5 Creedmoor.

If you need further information on this, contact your club’s secretary’s and seek clarification from your local MOD/Landmarc Representative.

Currently this ban is for SPTA users only, but we hear that it is likely to be rolled across all MOD Training areas where Fixed Firing Ranges are used by civilian clubs

And this from NRA website ..

The NRA is aware that Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) has announced a new restriction on the use of the 6.5 Creedmoor cartridge on fixed ranges on the Salisbury Plain Training Area (SPTA). This restriction applies to NRA Clubs licenced to use SPTA ranges.

The NRA is working with our colleagues in DIO to better understand the restriction and any broader implications for civilian users of MoD ranges elsewhere in the United Kingdom. As we get more information, this will be communicated to members and Clubs.

Apparently, the reason for this is that the military are considering the 6.5 Creed as a replacement for the 7.62, and until they have a handle on the ballistics as far as range safety area etc. goes, they're temporarily restricting it's use on MOD ranges.
There's a reference to this on the NRA website.

The club I belong to has advised the 6.5 creed and all the 6.5 variants are now banned on MOD ranges, not Bisley however, as it is not MOD owned.

It would be very enlightening to have sight of the primary notification that prohibits all 6.5mm calibres being used.

It’s worth noting that the main safety area at Bisley is owned by the MOD.

A memory of something that happened at Altcar ranges a few years back, all moderator use was banned on our arrival, it didn't last long , but we never got to the bottom of it. :-|

@Rory if not already aware :thumb:
The DOSR (Defence Ordnance Safety Regulator) regulatory notice published in Nov 24 (DOSR/RN/2024-06) specifically says '6.5mm ammunition', so this is not discriminating between the various 6.5mm natures.
I'm sure this is just an oversight, as the Defence discussion is about 6.5 Creedmoor specifically, but if using a MOD gallery range (GR), then currently, by the DOSR RN, all 6.5mm natures are verboten.
The RN does mention that it has not been confirmed that 6.5mm will fit in GR template, so my assumption is that more work will be undertaken to establish which GR's will accept the 6.5mm template.

The reason, it appears, that 6.5CM template is bigger than the .338LM one, is because there is a different cone of fire. The .338LM one is smaller (as the users - Snipers - are deemed to more highly disciplined and be less likely to be waving the muzzle about) then the 6.5CM template cone of fire. So this leaves a longer, wider template, which doesn't seem to be compatible with some GR's, but as mentioned, it's not confirmed which GR's, so for now, not to be fired.

Although Rory's touched on it, no one's posted the most recent update?

6.5mm Creedmoor ammunition:
The NRA has received confirmation from Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) that, on UK DIO ranges, 6.5mm Creedmoor ammunition shall only be used where 8.59mm ammunition (338 Lapua Magnum) is permitted. Club RCO’s must check range standing orders as part of the shoot planning/range recce process and ensure compliance.

NRA advises operators of private ranges (as defined at NRA Handbook para 108b) to check the limitations applicable to their ranges and ensure that all firearm / ammunition combinations in use fall within those limitations.

The use of 6.5mm Creedmoor ammunition on NSC ranges at Bisley is unaffected by DIO restrictions.

So as long as there's a 338LM standing order on the MOD range, 6.5CM is fine.

Our club was informed by Landmarc that 6.5 cm was under a temporary ban due to an incident with special forces trialing the round, our club secretary received an email few days later stating all 6.5 ammunition was now included in the "temp" ban.
Seems to be new rules and restrictions every month 🙄
