6.5 creedmoor barrel length

Evening all, I’ve got a slot for a 6.5mm creedmoor to fill. I would appreciate some real world advice on what barrel length is best suited to this cartridge. The rifles primary use will be for stalking in and around Oxfordshire with a little bit of gong bashing, and a trip to Scotland once a year. I will be reloading for this chambering. Im pretty set on a tikka. I’ve two t3’s at the moment both with 20inch barrels . Barrel length on these in 6.5mm seem to be 20 or 24 inch, plus moderator. I don’t want to make the wrong choice and regret it.

Been out today and had a feel of a 24 incher. (T3x veil widelands) Bit to long for my liking, really liked the look of it, but stick moderator on the end, the balance just did not feel right. Granted it did not have a scope on it. Think I will look out for a stubby 20 incher

Mine is a 24inch barrel fluted.bouĝht for long range but also
If I'm brutally honest for woodland stalking it catches branches barrel up and is unbalanced.
Barrel down it catches.
But I ĺove it.Its replaced my.243 .
My 30 06 is 20inch all tikas.
I really can't see the advantages of cutting 1.75 inches off IMHO

What's 4" between friends?

I use a 24" inch 6.5cm. No trouble with that at all. Also have a 24" .308 (main stalking rifle). Not got it caught up on branches nor poked the barrel into the mud yet. Main vernin control rifle is a 26" .223. I can't be trying hard enough because that stubbornly refuses to give me trouble. Shorty barrels I find less stable for offhand shooting at closer ranges. Last deer I shot was 70 yds offhand with the .308. For shooting from pick up over rough ground, a 16 to 20" barrel makes a lot of sense.

The bore cross sectional area is a bit smaller so the same pressure creates less force so the bullet is a bit slower at the muzzle than bigger bores. So a bit longer barrel is a benefit rather than shorter.

Depends what you are doing. It is about making sure that the round will arrive with sufficient velocity for good expansion at whatever range you are going to shoot. More important these days given the copper issue.

Make sure it has a fast enough twist for the longer copper bullets

I have a 26” 6.5 creedmoor ( for sale on here if you want to see pictures of length etc) with a DPT over the barrel mod it is the same length as my 24” 243 with an ASE mod. As the DPT is much lighter it balances well. I carry it barrel down if I’m worried about snagging it in branches but it does not stick that far up. The extra length helps with velocity with out pushing pressure limits for longer shots. Shoots under 1/4moa- but that’s irrelevant for stalking.
I haven’t found it any disadvantage and the 6.5prc I am having built has the same 26” length.

I have a 20 inch barrel on my R8 pushing a barnes 127 grain lrx @2890 fps and a 123 grain eldm @2930 fps does the job no fuss

Very good fps. What powder or powders are your using to achieve this ?

I put some factory rounds over the Chrono from my S20 lopped barrel the other day 3 shot groups and the averages were

S&B Blue 120gr 2875 fps

Honrnady Outfitter 120gr 2912 fps

RWS 93gr 3230 fps

American Whitetail 129gr lead 2699 fps
