6.5 creedmoor refusal for fox.

Just been knocked back for a variation for a CM for fox. As not suitable. I know there are better choices but… is this something I should accept or challenge.
Thanks.

Lee.

Tell them you will be looking to do your DSC1 and want to go on guided stalks - they still may not approve a 6.5 for fox especially if it's your first centrefire. After a while you can ask for ALQ.

Do consider, in a few years, you'll be having to buy non-lead rounds at £60-80 a box for the CM and you want have to do that for a .223

It’s a crazy system, as if you can justify it for something else (deer, target etc) then you should be able to get AOLQ and go and shoot foxes.

But, if your stated reason is foxes, I’d think you’ll be swimming against the tide unless you can think of a novel reason why a 6.5 is a requirement for your situation.

Looking again at the guidance, it says

In windy areas, where heavier bullets aid accurate shooting, or if applicants wish to use one rifle for shooting both deer and foxes, they may choose a rifle in 6mm (.243/.244) or 6.5mm (.264) calibre.

So, if you can say there’s a particular reason then go back and challenge them but it’s the exception not the rule.

Sometimes it’s just a case of working out what they want to hear and saying it.

I’ve got AOLQ for everything but, for example, said target and fox for my PPC. They called me and said they wouldn’t be keen for fox on a PPC (6mm) but would put it down for deer on the system.

I didn’t push (as they were helping me) but it seems that the 6mm was ‘too much’ for fox so they preferred to put it in the deer box. Of course, with AOLQ it doesn’t matter, it’s just a case of how they record my reason.

If I was in your situation, I’d only be fighting this if I couldn’t give a different reason, such as deer, that’s more likely to be accepted.

Discuss this with the FEO that if they give permission for an additional eg .222 for fox, this means an extra gun in circulation and it is more logical to have one to do all.
Or just have the .222 and enjoy it!

I dont think there are any forces who would justify a 6.5 of any sort for fox only. .22 CF no issue but anything above that and there needs to be deer for most forces to issue with a Deer and AOLQ. I have a .243 and a 6.5 Creed and both sit as Deer and AOLQ with no mention of fox.

Personally if I was thinking of changing rifles I would go .222 or .223 for fox

The HO guidance does say that good reason should not be equated to need, and that they should consider things primarily from the applicant's point of view. However it also says that just wanting to own a particular type/calibre of firearm isn't enough.
So in reality you'll need a fairly strong argument as to why foxing is a good reason to own a 6.5 creedmoor when there are plenty of "more suitable" options you could pick from.

What do they think a .243 Win is?
