Hi lads.

who is using a 6.5x47 lapua on reds, possibly not the best calibre but I have been paying it off for a while and its now here so I would like to start loading for it,

so if your using it on the reds and roe (as this is what I will be stalking with it) may I ask your favoured bullet and its weight, powder and weight.

thanks for you help.

bob.

new rifle is a little used Shultz & Larsen Victory in 6.5 x 47 Lapua, my first rather expensive rifle with grade 2 wood.

cheers lads

got some nice replies and the data I am after a kind gent is going to run the numbers for me so that I have a nice starting point.

bob.

HI Paul

well I have just made the last payment on the rifle and its now on its way, I had all the extras, scope mounts and some ammo component's, but as I have not used a 6.5x47 before I wanted to use the ammo he was using or had used.

120 gr bullets with N140, lapua brass I had no live ammo with the rifle as I was waiting for the slot, but I have a good mate on the forum running the numbers for me, so ill have the data soon and when it lands ill have to collect it and ill be ready to go,

I will pm you sir, I may even have you back this summer,

bob.

Hello Bob

Not that the following will really be of great use to you - different powder and different bullet - so maybe food for thought. I was asked to reload for a 6.5 x 47L three years ago. The rifle was a Steve Kershaw build and I used 123gr A Max with RL 15 and CCI mag primers (small !!). Did a OCW test and selected two weights that produced similar groups despite being over a grain apart and then played with distance off the lands. These were the results, the second target was with my final selection at a little under 250 yds

Bob, I have run a 6.5 Lapua for several years, 1:8 twist, and have tried all sorts of options. I and a few others have found that 140g bullets are often difficult to get accurate, but it loves 120g. The best powder I have found is R15 and I use a Nos 120BT for everything at 2960 fps. Sub 1/2 MOA all day long. It's a bit too feisty on Roe, perfect for fallow and hinds, marginal outside 200 yds on Red Stags but works of you get in the right spot. If you want the recipe send me a PM.

Have also played with Barnes 100 TTSX which go down the road at 3250 fps. They are pretty spectacular and do less damage than the BT's, but rarer than rocking horse s**t to find.

lol ok mty 123 amax r15 very good results aswell so were the 120's think I still have 120's? if I have I shall keep them for you I know I have 130 HP gave most of it away when I sold the rifle .
be nice to catch up in the summer bud :thumb:

I'm new to 6.5x47, and although early running in with 37.0 grains of RL15 and 123 Amax showed promise, as I tried to get up to the higher velocity accuracy tailed off, groups opening up to at best 3/4". Had a chat with a pal who's been running one for years, and it seems some barrels are more suited to slower powders, H4350 and N150 were suggested for me try. Too windy round this way at the moment, but it's looking like this may be the answer for mine, 41.0 gr H4350 putting 130 VLDs into 1/2" groups.

Thanks Paul.

Malxwal I use R17 and found as I trying different loads with 120bts , as you say the accuracy did drop off in the mid range , but I kept upping the loads then
the accuracy suddenly came back, maybe something to do with higher pressures.

cheers Lads

I will up date it asap.

I am still waiting for it to get to my rfd but I have and will do some loads,

a very good friend on the forum has given me the facts on the stuff that came with the rifle (powder and bullets) I will change to the same primers he uses and I will start from there.

thank you all so much

bob.

I have been told there's an issue with getting RL17 into the country just now, a banned constituent in it ?
It's one of the ones I'd try though. Plenty H4350 and N150 locally though.

I have struggled with R17 in everything I've tried it in. Just can't seem to make it work. There is also an issue with increased throat erosion with these new double base powders.

hi paul

this is my load data for starts as this what I have purchased with the rifle, barring the primers,

Hi bob.

I ran the numbers with vvn140 my load is as follows
cci 450m primer
nosler 120bt oal @ 2.67 (in my rifle 30 thou from lands perfect feed from mag)
lap brass h20 capacity is 49.1
36.7 grns vvn140
vocity was 2748fps accuracy was in the .3s for 5 shots
I hit several accuracy nodes but settled on this but even unstable nodes where below 1 moa accuracy.

your h20 capacity and primers may differ but start at 34 grains and work up you will find a max around 38 grains of n140 but careful mate with this case pressure signs go from subtle to popped primers in no time.

Let us us know how you get on bob I got faster velocities with other powders but there is somthing about this bullet at this speed at sub 300 yards that just pole axes deer with minimum damage.
