6x24x44

Do you mean 6-24 x 44? Presumably a Hawke or Vector of some sort?

That’s a good range for longer distance shooting, but probably not ideal if you’re starting out. The field of view will be quite small at the higher magnifications, so you can struggle to find the target and will loose sight picture easily when you pull the trigger (especially with a .270).

I think in your position, I’d be looking for something in the 3-9 x50 or 4-15 x 50 area. I started out with a 3-9 x 50 on a .270, and it worked perfectly.

Hi guys , is a 6x24x44 scope adequate for mounting on a 270. Rifle? What kind of range would this be suitable for?
Thanks
L
As Mungo pointed out is a fair reply, also people can only pick at an answer as the question has few details, I have had both a Kahles 3-12x56
also 2.5-15x56 on my .270 not on target shooting but a decent sight picture on quarry quite a way out.
list what you want to do then you can pick out from the answers.

A vector.

Hi Tim, targeting sika out to 200 yards likely.

If you're buying, there are a few swaro 8x56 on here for civil money. Had one on my 270 for years, zero at 200 and it'll deal with any sika out to 250 yards in a point and shoot manner.
If you already have it, then a 6-24 will also work, but you'll find you'll never need to go much above 10x at the range you're suggesting.

270 has been my go to cartridge for the last 40 years. It’s capable way out there - but realistically I consider it a 300 yard cartridge. I say this because with a 1 1/2” high zero at 100 you are dead on at 200 and about 5 inches low at 300 - so mostly point and shoot inside that range.

With that caveat - a 3x-12x variable or 4x-14x is perfect for magnification. Can keep it turned low for sudden events, and then at longer distance or more relaxed deer you can crank up the mag

I just put a new scope on mine - it had been wearing an old 3-12x50 Leupold with a 1” tube. I upgraded to a newer 4-14x50 Leupold with a 30mm tube and Firedot. Quite a bit brighter and clearer and the fire dot gives me a bit more help at dawn and dusk
