6x62 Frères !

Hi all,

Just went a little bit nuts and acquired a single shot rifle (aka "kiplauf") i fell in love with in 6x62 R Frères from Ludwig Borovnik in Ferlach Austria. I intend to use it mainly on roe but also all other deer species downwards in size from reds. I hear its a fantastic mountain caliber (chami and mouflon) as it shoots very flat.

Now.. ammo..! I don't handload (might need to start given scarcity..) and what I see as available off the shelf is as follows:
- Sologne Klassik - GPA - 89 grains - 1030 m/s @ 0m
- Sologne Klassik - Nosler BT - 95 grains - 1000 m/s @ 0m
- Sologne Klassik- Partition - as Nosler BT
- Sologne Klassik - Speer Spitzer BTSP - 100 grains - 980 m/s @ 0m
- SAX - KJG-HSR (lead-free) - 77 grains - 1090 m/s @0m

What are your thoughts on these options for the above game? Apparently the SAX groups very well in this rifle but I'm a little worried about the low weight. Mind you I know abolsutely nothing about lead free ammo and SAX as a manufacturer although read good things on this forum and others.

Any thoughts appreciated - thank you!

I just checked on eGun so as you can obviously afford such a gobsmacker I suggest that you buy the dies and find a good reloader near London to do the necessary for you. You will need to control the whole process IMO. Best wishes on the journey.

The 6x62 is based on the 9.3x62 case and requires a standard length rifle action. 6x62 factory loads drive an 85 grain bullet at a muzzle velocity (MV) of 3460 fps with 2260 ft. lbs. of muzzle energy (ME), and a 100 grain bullet at a MV of 3313 fps and ME of 2442 ft. lbs. These loads are effective on a wide variety of small and medium game. The 100 grain bullet seems particularly suitable for all species of U.K. and European deer. The 6x62 offers flat trajectory, good killing power, and moderate recoil.

Jonas6x62 Hi,

I own a Heym SR20 in 6x62 Freres.
Its very accurate and low in recoil.
As there is no ammounition available i have to reload myself.
As im Austrian I use it for roe deer hunting near the Hungarian border up to 300m.
Here some reloading data:
90grs Ballistic Tip 24090 55grsMRP 3274fps
85grs Sierra HPBT 1530 55,56grs MRP 3280fps
75grs V-Max 22420 57,25grs R905 3455fps

What a find 👍
That’s a beaut of a firearm, I haven’t seen anything hereabouts like that quality, keep us in the loop on your journey with it please, I’d love one of those as my only stalking rifle

I suspect in the UK you will struggle to find ammo. Get a set of dies and reload. When I got my 7x65r Peter Hambrusch in Ferlach was able to provide me with a set of dies. I would get hold of Borovnik in Ferlach. They may be able to supply brass as well. I was lucky in that a kind brit in Bavaria sent me some RWS cases and a Frankonia Catalogue that still has pride of place in the small room’s library.

Really nice rifle - wonderful for any deer in the UK. Ignore the sucking of teeth that most will make - not synthetic, not a bolt action, not moderated, only a single shot etc etc. They are ignorant and jealous.

Edit - re reading the OP this looks to be a rimmed cartridge. So brass not formed from the rimless 9.3x62 rimless cartridge.

A quick bit of googling

Thanks.
This supplier of oddball cases is 60-70 kms from my home.

Thanks guys, really excited about this and had been dreaming of a Ferlacher for years so couldn't feel more privileged to look after one for however many years I'll be lucky enough to have it.

Luckily i'm in Europe at the moment so was thinking of trying my luck with any of the ready made cartdriges i mentioned in my OP before going for the reloading option. I'd be interested in hearing about your thoughts on those and especially my worry on the copper one.

I wouldn't worry about the copper one. I use fairly fast 50gr Barnes and 62gr GS Custom copper bullets very effectively on Roe. They will also handle larger deer easily.

Congratulations on the rifle - I’m not at all envious 🤢

Re Copper, there are plenty of good 6mm bullets available that work better than most lead bullets. They just kill and do not make a messy carcass like lead does.

Get ammunition in Europe, get a set of dies and the reload as when the time comes.

I use RWS brass in my 7x65r. Starting ti cull my first brass after 10 reloads.

Have looked at the CIP dimensions 7x65r might be a starting point. Shoulder is about in the right place, walls need blowing out and of course neck taking down to 6mm

I did once run a 7x65r case into a 243 die just to see if it was possible to shrink neck down. It did quite easily.
