7mm-08

Well I have not seen any such posts about the .308 Win.

My point exactly, you HAVE harped on about the 7mm08 not being able to match 7mmRM performance - yet no one ever questions the .308's ability as a cartridge. No one has said it is a 'super cartridge' but just out of interest what, in your opinion is a super cartridge? I do fail to see how a good calibre - 7mm, combined with a good case '08, giving good down range ballistics, can be such a bad thing?

Or have you just got a bee in your bonnet becasue its a relatively new cartridge that isn't long actioned and hasnt been around for at least 200 years? I mean surely there cannot be much more than + or - 100fps difference between a 7mm08 and 7x57mauser using comparable bullets and loads?

Actually the "Bee in my Bonnet" as you put it in respect of the 7-08 is just how many are peddaling it as the be all and end all. Incidently just as a lot do with free floated barrels and it's not the case in fact. It's an option that's all.

Also it was not me that suggested that the 7-08 could provide startling velocities but another poster here who posted a load giving velocites which far exceed any maximum loads I can find in any of the loading data manuals I have to hand here. In fact the load given exceeds that maximum load with that powder and bullet weight for the .280 Remington cartridge. If indeed it's not a mistake then we have a prime example of overloading.

Now you ask about "Super Cartridges" well it seems that today's fashion/trend call it what you will for short cartridges relies heavily upon extra high pressures to reach their velocities something which must contribute to extra wear and tear on no only barrels but actions and locking mechanisms as well. Not so sure that is a good thing.

Looking logically at all round performance the .28"/7mm calibre does seem to stack up well in both performance and bullet weight selection so I would have to come down on the side of either the .284 Winchester or the .280 Remington both or which are not over 40 years old. The .280 Remington is actually probably a better cartridge than the 270 Winchester but of course it's not that popular in the UK.

That is not the reason I chose to build the .280AI by the way. That came about due to different criteria which has been gone into on the forums before. I would not have gone that way if I could have found a very nice original .280 Ross that I could afford. The .280 AI is a sort of modernised and easier to load for cartridge that should be capable of duplicating the .280 Ross performance.

Ive used 7mm08 for some years now and shot Reds,Fallow,Roe and Muntys with handloaded 140gr Partitions all with great results,I wouldnt use anything else, great caliber!!!!!!!!!!!

I shoot a 7-08 and am very happy with it. Not sure what makes it so special over a .308 really - I only bought it because I found a stunning Tikka 595 which happened to be in that calibre! Had it been in 6.5x55 (a 695 in that case) I would have bought that too.

One thing's for sure I'm a .243 hater. Maybe when you get this new gun you could be a convert to the larger round.

I use 139gr Hornady SST in my rifle and they work very well. Good knock down but not too much damage.

Let us know how you get on with it when it arrives.

I am interested in this thread for the reason that I only have a humble .243 !!!

The chap who runs our informal syndicate is slightly critical of 7mm08 :stir: but then again he runs a .308 which he believes is the best deer calibre for all species.

In my ignorance where is the defence for the .308 ???

Cheers + ATVB

Well yes the .308 is a superb stalking round, very versatile and effective, I found that the Brno ZKK 601 I used liked 165 Grain Nosler Ballistic tips and they didn't wreck carcases but did drop the Deer well. In deference to the feeling of my stalking mentor how had a severe dislike for Ballistic Tips I switched to using the Speer 165 Gr Spitzer #2035. Whilst the grouping may not have been quite as tight the Deer did not seem to notice and went down nicely.

I later years I also tried the Hornady 130 grn SP bullet to good effect. Sometimes one had to "compromise" to keep things sweet ;) I was very happy with the Nosler Ballistic tips performance and would most likely have stuck with them. In your case acquiring a .308 might earn Brownie points.

Or you could not be a lick arse and show him you're not a sheep. In REAL deer stalking terms, there's no difference, the deer won't notice what bullet they've been hit with and there'll be no noticeable difference in carcase damage. At typical deer stalking ranges ie sub 200 yds, again no particular real world difference. There's only really ammo availability to consider if you got a 7mm08, but if you reload, that's not an issue.

Thank you all
its a good job we all dont like the same thing or the world would be a very boring place!
I have no real reason for moving away from the .243 apart from i fancied a change and wouldnt mind haveing a go at boar sometime soon!
Thanks again!

I bought a Tikka t3 lite in 7mm-08 last year, and have shot 1 Sika, 10 Fallow and 1 Red this winter. All were shot with Federal 140gr Fusion Factory ammo as I have not had time to work up a load yet. All the bullets have exited except on the red hind which was a large beast and had to angle the shot, found the bullet just under the skin.

Its a mild round to shoot and not to loud (not moderated) I am very happy with it and would recommend this round to anyone, its the perfect all-rounder for the UK. It would also be perfectly suitable for wild boar should the opportunity arise.

All I can say Home Loader is go and get one!

Hello all I would like to add to my gun cabinet with a 7mm-08 im wondering if anyone has anything negative to say as the people i know with them love them but most people are biased about their gun!
