7x57r kipplauf help please

Hi
I have trawled my way through all the info I can find on this and other forums and believe I have throughly confused myself, which is not difficult!
I have had a hankering for a kipplauf rifle for years and have decided to scratch that itch, probably an age thing wanting a short, light single shot but there it is!
Having made that decision its now a choice of caliber and I like the idea of the traditional 7x57r but then I looked for reloading components and am wondering if a .308 would be easier even though I can't use gravity to extract the spent cartridge!

SD member Whatmuff has put me onto brass, cheers mate.

Vit N160 is plentiful as are 7mm 160 grain gamekings

now the testing part.........

I like to reload with a clear set of measured parameters so always measure chamber and jump to the lands however nobody makes a 7x57r tapped case for a comparator gauge so im going to have to do that myself with a shot case, problem number one sorted unless anyone knows more or can supply one ....... at a cost

Lee length gauge and shell holder for a 7x57r doesn't exist, so how would you suggest trimming cases to length simply without having to invest in a trimmer work stations? Could I use a 7x57 length gauge with a different lock stud/shell holder and if so which one?

Nearly last but not least..... Hornady are the only manufacturer that make a set of 7x57r dies but there is a 16 week wait which to be honest im not worried about as the rifle will take as long and Ive waited years to commit! However i did read that some of you load using an RCBS number 26 shell holder and 7x57 mauser dies, is this normal practice and would I not just be better to wait for the 7x57r dies?

Finally as I have your attention, or hope I have, anyone shoot 160g game kings in their 7x57r with N160? Sierra gives 38.6g to 43.4g max for N160 and I have quite a lot of it, how do you get on with N160 ?

Mark at 1967Spud has helped no end but as he says he doesn't shoot the 7x57r so can't comment on the points above so please, give me a couple of minutes to pass on your wisdom, I know a few of you are Kipplauf 7x57r lovers..........help me to be one!

Thanks in advance

First of all, congratulations on your choice! I used to have a Sauer drilling in 7x57R that I reloaded for, using N 140 and a 150gr bullet. I think you're making life harder for yourself than it needs to be. Unlike bolt actions, break action barrels tend to have really long chamber. Your bullet is never going to get anywhere near the lands, so trying to finesse AOL doesn't really help much. I just used the SAAMI dimensions, and I had touching groups with my selected loading. The fact that the barrels tend to be long helps. I used Lee dies in 7x57, and it was just a question of using another shellholder. I forget the number but it's the same one as for .300WM, either 2 or 5.

If you're interested, I also have about 20 unfired, primed cases left over.

It would be the Lee no. 5 if the same as for 300WM

You can get RWs cases in 7x57r quite easily. A certain gun shoo in Edinburgh has them on the shelf. You can also (currently thatcis) buy them online from likes of Frankonia. RWS is good tough brass and after 10 years i am just starting to retire the 60 cases I got for my 7x65r.

i have used a K95 in 300 win mag and 222. Pulling out the rimless case is a pain. You have to get your fingers in under back of the action. It would be difficult with gloves in the winter or with cold hands. The rimless has ball detent plunger on the extractor that you have to pull the case over.

with a rimmed case - just tip the rifle and empty falls out, and new round just drops in. If you reload go with the 7x57r or the 7x65r.

7x57R dimensions are compatible to 7x57, so you can use same tools.

I am loading Fox Hunter 130gr, 42.0gr N140, OAL 76mm, CCI 200. Cases are different, mostly S&B, some RWS, some Geco, few of them are Norma.

IMR4350 no longer available in UK ... not REACH compliant

Redding do 7x57 dies that you can use. No 5 shell holder. RWS do some very good 162gr ammo.
160gr game kings work well with 47.3gr RS62

I have contacted 1967spud who is importing me a set of 7x57r specific dies, I can easily wait 4 months for them when the rifle will be 7 months anyway!
As for bullets I have 160g Gamekings all ready to go cheers mate, :)
