Stabbing your own the femoral artery can and does happen. Never use force and cut away from yourself is good advice!

The last case I heard was in the deer larder at Mar Lodge - the stalker was splitting the ribcage on a hanging carass cutting downwards with a knife held like a dagger (Don't know why - they do have trestles and saws available).

Another stalker who was a trained first aider was present and by all accounts did a good job to reduc the bleeding. A helicopter got him to Inverness hospital in under 40 minutes. He survived after a transfusion of (15?) units of blood but the doctors said it was a near thing and another few minutes would have been too long despite the FA.

They now have more chain mail aprons and gloves available than a knights dressing room! Do they use them?
