A little wet

Is that a pet pheasant??

Those swollen streams remind me of a beaters shoot 40 or more years back down in Sussex. In one area there were lots of old small pastures which had a little drainage ditch/stream running through them. When they were ‘normal’ it was about 2’ bank to bank but could also be 2’ or more deep where years of meandering water had cut them into the ground. When it had been raining hard the run off inundated them to the point that they over ran the banks & the water stretched some distance side to side & it wasn’t always easy to work out where the actual ditch was.

This particular day it’d been raining a fair bit & the ditch had turned into about a 20’ wide stream of brown muddy water. The sensible ones amongst us had decided to make a detour along it & use a farm track that crossed it to get to the other side. One lazy bugger, we’ll call him Graham as that was his name, decided he knew the ditch well enough to wade in almost to the top of his wellies then find the edge & step across it, gun in hand of course!

As we all watched he cheerfully laughed & said he’d be first back to the trailer as he felt around with one foot, found the edge of the ditch & took a big step forward with his other foot… he disappeared out of site completely, well almost - there was one arm in the air holding the gun above the water for what seemed like an eternity before the rest of him surfaced again.

He was never allowed to forget that day & every shoot day after that when it rained & the ditches burst their banks the keeper always made a point of asking Graham where the best place to cross was 😝

On a serious note though, be very careful with streams in spate like that - dogs & small kids can easily come to harm in such powerful water.
