Hunting and Firearms Policy
NSW has over 800 National Parks and State Reserves, most of which have little or no use. The major parties keep promising new national parks in an election campaign auction, even though nobody is using the last round of parks they created. The NSW Government refuses to release its full National Parks usage figures – such is its embarrassment on this issue. One Nation believes in maximising the use of these wasted public assets, opening them up for hunting, 4WD, motorbike, boating, fishing and horse riding uses.
The national parks and reserves cover 13% of the NSW land mass. We simply don’t have enough people who want to use these vast areas for environmental purposes. They have become the equivalent of political trophies to satisfy the ego of green MPs like Matt Kean. The waste of public money is scandalous.
Hunters would play a cost-effective role in reducing the problem of feral animals. Nationally, it is estimated that each year 2 million native animals are killed by feral cats alone. NSW has 203,000 firearm licenses issued for recreational hunting and vermin control. Our policy is to mobilise these hunters to assist with feral animal control in the National Park and State Reserve habitats.
NSW One Nation wants the parks and reserves with little or no current use to be converted to hunting, 4WD, motorbike, boating, fishing and horse riding facilities. The same safety standards that the Department of Primary Industry uses in State Forests would apply to hunting on these other crown lands, making it a very safe use.
Taxpayers are funding National Parks, let the public use them for valid recreational purposes. Otherwise, Labor, Liberal and the Nationals will continue to wash millions of dollars down the drain for parks that nobody goes near.
One Nation also opposes the NSW Government policy to hand control of national parks to Aboriginal interest groups. At Mount Warning in the Wollumbin National Park (near Murwillumbah) this has resulted in people being prevented from climbing the peak and using images of the mountain. Woman in particular have been banned. Local businesses and tourism have suffered. Our parks and reserves must be for everyone.
One Nation supports responsible gun ownership and will preserve the current laws which allow law-abiding citizens access to firearms, whether it be for work, farming or sports-related activities. We do not believe that further stringent measures or regulations are required regarding licensing. One Nation calls for stricter border security and tougher sentencing for gun criminals and traffickers. In particular, it is our policy to:
1. Support responsible firearm ownership for farming, target shooting, recreational hunting, employment and sporting purposes.
2. Support evidence-based firearm legislation that balances licensing, safe use, safe storage and community safety.
3. NSW One Nation does not believe law-abiding firearm owners are terrorists or criminals-in-waiting. We support legislation that targets criminals and criminal activity, not law-abiding firearm owners under the guise of ‘crime control’.
4. One Nation believes in stricter border security and tougher penalties for crimes committed with firearms or other objects.
5. One Nation believes that further regulation that targets law-abiding firearm owners will not reduce the illegal criminal use or trade in firearms.
6. One Nation supports a permanent firearm amnesty where members of the public can hand in firearms and dangerous items without fear of repercussions.
7. We support our returned servicemen and women and object to them being treated as second class citizens by Firearm Registries when applying for firearm licenses.
8. The public and industry engagement and customer service standards of Firearm Registries must also be improved.
9. One Nation supports the ongoing establishment of shooting ranges in NSW to promote the safe use of firearms, firearm training and provide facilities for mandatory attendance requirements. As much as possible, the NSW Government should assist the ranges in holding secure land tenure over their facilities.
10. One Nation supports the right of all people to fish, hunt and harvest wild fauna and flora for their personal use (see above).
11. One Nation recognises the cultural, traditional, spiritual, economic and environmental significance of recreational hunting and the important role recreational hunters play in the control of feral and introduced animals (see above). Hunters add $1.4 billion in value to the NSW economy each year.
12. Recreational hunting is recognised internationally as a legitimate and essential part of conservation and species management. We support the expansion of regulated recreational hunting on public and Crown lands (see above). Just as every two years we cheer on our shooters and their success at the Olympic and Commonwealth Games, it needs to be publicly recognised and accepted by government that recreational hunters and shooters are no less legitimate and praiseworthy in what they do.
