A proper lion hunt

Many thanks for the reply, Bos en Dal. I am sure that an enjoyable and sporting Lion hunt can be had in SA.
I am not sure that I've ever met anyone who has hunted a Lion, it would seem to be quite an uncommon goal amongst British sportsmen these days.

It's definitely a goal for me, unfortunately the money is the sticking point. Once I've got this marriage out the way I'll be cutting down on some things to afford some Africa time and Lion is on the list for sure. Even just a lioness would be phenomenal for me.

Jeesus.......nobody? Going by the "Cecil" thread I thought we had loads of lion hunting experts on here!

Most people bitch here how much a blaser R8 costs, how many do you think can afford a lion hunt?

I think to be absolutely sporting you should try stalking them, with a bow, in the elephant thorns. You know its the sporting thing to do as you are giving the lion a fair chase, and the chances are it will kill you.

Apart from the bow I couldn't agree more. I have nowt against hunting with bows but its not for me.

So I'd supplement the bow for a nice revolver or a single shot rifle with open sights to keep the challenge aspect high.

I trust you. But in the interests of a fair chase I believe the right and proper way should be stalking with a bow. Just to increase the rush.

Not for me. Rather you than me thanks.

Besides anyone hunting dangerous game with a bow will have one or two Ph's beside them backing them up with a rifle. There is NO way any PH will want a client mauled, killed by a Buff or any other dangerous game animal. And there is a slim chance that you will dispatch such an animal with one arrow.

I have friends who have hunted lions over baits. But as the OP has dismissed this type of hunting out of hand as not being sportsman's like whatever that means I encourage the OP to follow his dream.

Can anyone shed some light on the impact of the recent PHASA vote on lion hunting?
What do you think will become of lion hunting in South Africa?

According to Gordon Cundhill, might be Cundill, the only proper way to hunt a lion is to walk him up. Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbawe, mabey Mozambique.
I think so, for myself. I have hunted bobcats several ways, like tracking and calling. I have hunting mountain lions, which is pretty tough now because of all the tree hugger restrictions put on that ( micro permit areas, short "seasons" of a few weeks, no dogs in some places ). I hunted a jaguar long ago, a cattle killer, from a tree blind, by calling. That is where dogs come in good to get onto the track of a troublesome cougar.

This gets me to my feeling that the real challenge is to hunt a particular predator, not just any cat ( or bear, or wild boar, for that matter ), but a particular one that is trouble, on foot, by getting to the recent kill and tracking it. I know several people who have been fortunate enough to take a lion, and the ones who have taken several lions have been like this, and each of their hunts lived up to all expectations I have for fair chase and hair-on-end hunt. I had a chance to go with one of them a decade ago but could not get free from work, and vow to not let the chance pass again. These opportunities were very inexpensive, making it possible for me, and my friends who did it.

I can't even afford a few days stalking, but if thats what you want to do and you have the cash mate, why not. Life would be boring if we all did the same things.
