A Spike in Elk Hunting

Recently returned from an Elk hunt in the Rocky Mountains, for those who enjoy a hunting story, I've put it down for you here:

I did enjoy the yarn and the pics. Thanks for your effort putting it together. Big hills, big deer and big guns...all the basic components of a great lifestyle. Your Elk are a tad bigger than my Sambar so I can appreciate the work involved with carcass recovery.

Out of interest, why use a match BTHP bullet for hunting when there are lots of hunting specific bullets to choose from?

Hornady don't list this bullet for hunting anything other than small game/varmints < 50 lbs.

Boat tail hollow point … 400 yards … elk … dropped within 40 yards …

Hard to doubt the effectiveness.

Great write up.

The USO scope has caught my eye. It looks unbelievably like my Minox ZP5. Which is a good thing I may add! I know USO have been through a lot and to be honest I had written them off a while back. I’m going to take a look.

Thanks for the very nice write up, and Weidmannheil for the elk! :) The area looks beautiful, and yep, memories shared are different, than ones made solo. 🤠

Very small sample.

Consensus on the US forums is the bullets is not suitable for large game as it blows up.

I just wanted to understand why the OP would choose this over a dedicated hunting bullet!
One animal is a small sample, but I have dozens of them. I started another thread to discuss this very subject.
In that thread I go into exhausting detail, but the basic argument is that the consensus you mention above is wrong. Go check out this other thread:

I've only had it for a bit, but I am loving the scope.

Why not answer on this thread?

I have to say the shot doesn’t sound particularly humane, you took the shot at 400+ yards, and in the time it took you to walk that 400 yards and find the shot site, say 10+ minutes the animal had still not expired.

With the correct placement and bullet choice am animal should be dead inside 2 minutes, if not a lot less.

General consensus is the bullets blow up if they hit bone, so if your placement is wrong and you hit bone, you will cause unnecessary suffering. Even with your placement, you caused unnecessary suffering.

You also haven’t answered the question as to why you chose a match bullet over a hunting bullet, which undoubtedly would be just as accurate.

That is why I posted the other thread, it goes into exhausting detail of why I have been shooting match bullets at animals for the last 20 years

So in short, the reason is?
1. Its what I shoot already, familiarity and consistency are key to being accurate (I don't want to add variables unnecessarily).
2. They are usually less expensive than "hunting" bullets and sold in higher volume packages.
3. They perform better at longer distances (both in flight and flesh)
4. They have worked flawlessly for me, I've never not recovered an animal hit properly.
