Accidental Discharges

Very short memory on this site...I made this very same point last week and also included my own employment history. When i mentioned how shocked i was at the macho attitudes and how bad some of the training was i got shouted down :???:

There are many ex-forces 'professionals' who end up in firearms teams and soon leave in dispair.

2 incidents spring to mind:

1. Transporting one very bad boy up to the City of London and then taking him up in the secure lift to the courts. In the lift i could here an annoying clicking noise which i discovered was my partner flicking his safety off and on due to boredom!

2. On a range when some other squaddies were using the LAW practice units which replaced the explosive head with a solid metal dart. One didn't fire and the numptie tossed it into the trench in-front of the firing pitts. Upon cleaning up, the idiot retrieves the LAW and proceeds to carry it towards the rest of the guys, Law fires and the **** hit the fan.

Unfortunately not Finnbear, that would have been something to laugh over. It wiped out a bloke before skelping along an old 4 tonner and bouncing into scrub.

Hi Paul, I know what you mean, I to have been in the vicinity of ND's and they tend to waken you up to reality very quickly only one of them could have been near to an AD, We had been examining some new guns as to fit and finish, the two guns were from a top end manufacturer and we had them to field test them, one a s by s 270 and one a falling block in 243, the 243 had a set trigger and during the evening we had been testing trigger pull etc, as we had zeroed the day before we were going out at first light, we left the caravan and set about loading our guns, here is where the safety aspect of training, paid of as we pointed our guns in safe area as we loaded, and my friends 243 went off, The silence that followed was DEAFENING!. We repeated the exercise, with an empty case and found that if we set the trigger, unloaded and reloaded the set on the trigger remained and the force of closing the block was enough to release the firing pin. This was 30 years ago and the maker sorted the problem before release of that model. I suppose we could have tested all the worst case scenarios before actually loading the gun but as it was given for us to field test we assumed this had been done, it is only through training that the outcome was a deafening silence followed by some very descriptive expletives’.

Dry Powder.

I was once informed that it paid to be careful whilst closing the bolt on your rifle as a poorly-bedded primer could result in a discharge.............this bloke touted himself as an 'expert' & prided himself on the number of certificates & qualifications he'd amassed. I kid you not..............................

The point being or care to elaborate Woodsmoke? :!:

P.S. You have certainly revived an old thread here mate. I don't know if you had noticed but the last previous posting was July 2010.
