Update: devcon bedded and redneck reloaded some 50 grn Sierra sp and it’s 1/2 moa. Not terribly scientific but happy with that. If anyone is getting good result with 50g ppu I have quite a few that I probably won’t use
As it happens I do a .224" recycling service for unwanted bullets so if you're stuck with them don't fret, I'm here to helpUpdate: devcon bedded and redneck reloaded some 50 grn Sierra sp and it’s 1/2 moa. What load and length?I recently got a sako a1 .222 having wanted one for some time. I have to say I was expecting better accuracy having heard the multiple reports of easy to load for and super accurate. These are two 10 shot groups off a bag on my car bonnet at 100m it was a little blustery but nothing terrible. The tighter group is 40grn varmagedon and the more open group is ppu 50g sp both over n130.
Wondering what my next move should be accept accuracy, experiment more with charge or seating depth or try different bullets. Am I expecting too much?
I home load for 308 243 and 270 the 308 and 243 shot 1/2 inch groups with possibly the first batch of reloads the 270 was a little more fussy but have found a 1/2 inch group with 130 prohuters.
Dunno Ed. I got it from Drew. It’s pretty accurate with varmagedon and now 50g varminter so I’ll get rid of the ppu as I can’t be arsed trying to get a tune out of the ppu. Interestingly Drew gave me 100 ppu factory with the rifle and they were ok 1” ish but I haven’t tried any other factory. Reloader 7 seems better than 130 but 130 seems easier to get consistentlyWhat load and length?
PPU bullets can be great but the tolerances are massive
Varmageddon are short stubby little feckers
Not that easy to load accurately comparatively
What do you know about the rifle/barrel etc?
Most .222s I have owned are very easy to load for
Except an S491 i bought
Bastard of a thing
Hated N133 and 50gr sp
Failed to shoot 52gr amax like the BRNo i had before
Had to switch powders and started from scratch
Once i had it singing it was great
But it took a lot more effort to load for it
What does yours do with factory ammo?
Give it a good clean and see how you go. How old is it? what is the state of the barrel? i am just looking for reloads for a SH steyr in .222 i have had .222 rifles before and the accuracy in good gun should be superbI recently got a sako a1 .222 having wanted one for some time. Forgive the ignorance what type of scope is an AlpexI’ve never seen a .222 that needed bedding to shoot clover leaf groups, and I’ve had a few!
I’d leave bedding to last IMHO.
