ADVICE FROM HAMPSHIRE POLICE

It wasn’t about stalking - it was about HAD, which can easily involve meeting people on the road before and after

I was referring more to the OP, although I'm pretty sure I could deal with a HAD without getting within 2 metres of anyone. In any case, an HAD is necessarily going to invklve the police pre-approving it anyway?

The only thing stopping me from doing deer management is that no dealers are taking deer right now.
One has to wonder at what point will revenue from deerstalking have to be 'parked' and if neccesary beasts left to decompose where they fall on the hill.

Its not a pleasing scenario but let's not forget very few fox shooters think twice about chucking Ol' Charly into a patch of brambles at the end of their session with the lamp.

Apthorpe...I think you misunderstood my meaning, perhaps I did a poor job of explaining, when you stated, people may regret saying shooting animals is/was unnecessary, or words to that effect, I meant, at the moment there are far bigger fish to fry, and in turn the likes of Packham will not be given the time of day, recovery, financial, emotional, etc will figure rather more in people's minds than some jumped up Pratt like him.

Ok, just to play devil's advocate -
Would it be more terrible than going out for HAD, getting Covid-19 from someone who happened to also be at the scene, getting admitted to hospital, and tying up a bed that could otherwise have been used for someone who contracted Covid-19 in a care home because they couldn't physically practice social-distancing? I'll leave that for the philosophers to answer...

Like I said, just paying devil's advocate. I'm just as ****ed off at not being able to get out stalking - and trout season has been open for 15 days now too :(

I respect your entitlement to a view.

However, I am fairly comfortable that I could attend a HAD scene and not feel the need to French Kiss any other member of the public who happened to be floating about the scene.
If I could not manage the scene or despatch a critically wounded animal from 2m plus then I would be a sorry excuse for a stalker.

Life (and death) still has to go on during this crisis. Sensible precautions and common sense, should not disappear because of a once in a life time medical pandemic.
I, like (I suspect) you have been housebound for nearly two months (with at least another two to go) so it is a case of 'hang tough'.

My wife is an ITU Nurse and more stressed than I have ever seen her. I am a retired Police Officer (called back to service -and know that I must go) but life must go on and for the love of God: let us remember we who are and deal with this nightmare as sensible, unshakeable individuals who, whilst sill obeying the necessary quarantine rules can still exercise adult mature judgement for the greater good - and that includes 'despatching' animals in desperate need.

Also; must be terrible that you have not been able to go Trout fishing...pleased to hear that I am not the only one with an unused rod...

No worries - not my view - an unlikely scenario - not meant to be taken literally.

Clearly the philosophical concept didn’t come across in my post - I was just pondering the “under any circumstances” statement and I contrived a hypothetical scenario in which dealing with the suffering of a deer had an adverse consequence for a human being.

Like I said - hypothetical.

Perhaps the lack of fishing and stalking is affecting me more than I thought! ;)

I am on that scheme too.

I received an email on 30 March from TVP saying "During this difficult time the Force has made the decision that all volunteering will cease for the time being. " I had assumed that covered the HAD volunteers as well, though if I do get called out then an incident number should suffice if stopped by the police.

As I'm on the same scheme I too received that same e-mail, I questioned the sender asking if it applied to HAD's.

Her reply was:

Subject: RE: Coronavirus

Hi Chris,

No we would look to still utilise your skills as we would not require you to go into a Police Station etc.

Unfortunately I had to make the email rather generic as otherwise to list each role would take forever.

Thank you for your continuing help.

Kind regards,

Claire

I quite agree, however my point is that when this emergency is over some tit like Packham is likely to emerge - and hit us with the stick of our self-induced stupidity now.

Hi Chris,
Might be worth blanking out the copper's contact details in your post as it includes both a mobile and an email for her and she might not want them on the internet?
Kind regards,
Carl

Interestingly the local police to me have had to turn out to at least three reports of gun shots in the last few days. The first incident warranted the helicopter and an armed response team...

There's lots more bored people at home and sat out in there gardens in this nice weather, and whether its genuine concern or a bit of maliciousness any folk out and about are going to get reported and I did see something on social media about people already having there licences revoked.

I'm lucky enough to live on a farm and there's plenty of Roe Bucks showing, but with no crop damage etc I cannot justify going out, the law / rules are too woolly and I value my licence / sport too much.

All fox we shoot are either removed from where they are shot & put into a waste stream elsewhere, or go in the farmers midden / bonfire.:tiphat:

The advice from Hampshire police is flawed. There is no restriction on going to work, except for hospitality business which have been ordered to close. The guidance is to work from home if you can. There is no requirement to only work in essential services. The key workers are a list of people who can send their kids to school, some how key workers/essential services have been conflated (please correct me if I have this wrong, there has been such a deluge of dross in the media that the important messages have been buried).

That said, I think it is a great thing that the professional and amateur wildlife management community have been able to show such restraint

I will say it again if it’s your job then there’s no problem with travel. Shooting can not be done from home.

I guess the significant word being “work”, grey area if not employed or contracted by the land owner who’s ground you are shooting on.
