Advice on FAC

Hi all,
I am seeking some advice on my FAC. I was considering getting rid of my FAC and enquired about it and what the process would be as I also have a co-term certificate with my SC which I wanted to keep. I then decided to do a commission sale on my rifle and sound mod which was then transferred to the RFD and I then sent all the details to the police online but kept the certificate. The online system has then let the police know I no longer have a firearm in my possession as it does, but I had an email asking me “if I return my certificate, it can be cancelled” I misunderstood the email thinking they meant to take everything off it and re-issue it, but due to misunderstanding the email I have returned the certificate which has now been destroyed and I assume cancelled.

I understand that my misunderstanding of the email has lead to this but I would like my FAC back as I had actually decided to keep it. I am yet to email the police as I’m not sure what to say, other than it was a misunderstanding. This specific constabulary has been great over all and I’ve never had an issue just to make that clear.

Any advice on this would be great thank you all.

Since you surrendered your FAC it should have been deleted from NFLMS, which means it cannot be re-issued. That means you are in 'new grant' territory, with whatever process is associated with your Force.

Ah… now that’s a pain, I assume it’s just a case of explaining them and no doubt going through the new grant process?

Unfortunately yes.
Demonstrating "good reason", background check, medical records back to birth....etc.
Depending on the force concerned there might be some latitude given that you still have a SEC and how recently you surrendered.
Hopefully you are not in Gloucestershire, Dorset, or anywhere in Wales.....

If you dispose of all your firearms without requesting a 1 for 1 variation to replace any of them the police will cancel the licence because you have no ‘good reason’ for an FAC. This doesn’t apply to shotguns.
Hopefully you can resolve this with your FEO.

Yeah that does make sense to be fair… the RFD still has my firearm as they are selling it on my behalf so we shall see what happens but what you have both said makes sense, thanks again!

Probably far too late to undo what's been done but you did not transfer your firearm to your RFD, you "lodged" it with them to sell on commission and the RFD will likely view the situation as such. The process is the same for repairs or servicing and the RFD would, in these cases and with commision sales, issue a receipt. There would have been no requirement whatsoever to inform your FLO. Let's say, shock horror, you had an out of sequence inspection of your firearms and security and they asked about firearm xxxxx, you would have just shown them the receipt.

Unlikely, but nevertheless possible; RFD goes out of business, shop burns down, has a flood, potential customer drops or damages said firearm and so on. How do you deal with that in regard to what was your firearm? Also, a change of heart on the sale now means that you cannot simply go back to the RFD and take possession, you don't have a valid FAC.

My advice would be to speak to your FLO as soon as and explain the sequence of events and how you misunderstood the process and the consequences. Can it be untangled and wound back a few days? I don't know, maybe the actions of the NFLMS are indeed non negotiable.

Apologies for the downbeat post but I do sincerely hope that you succeed in getting a positive result.

I would explain politely the misunderstanding to the Manager and or "Decision maker", & suck it and see:

"Hopefully you are not in Gloucestershire, Dorset, or anywhere in Wales.."... North Wales are extremely good at understanding the problem/s if fully explained in a sensible manner.

You might want to contact your preferred shooting rights organisation, such as BASC, GTA etc.
They should have a direct line of communication with the Licencing Manager (or Inspector), and may be able to expedite a solution.

Yes I am still a member of BASC and a few other organisations but BASC is probably the most prolific.

What Police area do you come under?
Call the Firearms team after 9.00am and ask to speak with the Regional Firearms Officer for your area. Names are in the S&C magazine, towards the back.
Or email them at and they should call you back pretty quickly.I

Perhaps after BASC won a couple of Appeals and plod had to cough up the legal costs!

Unfortunately, I suspect you're going to have to reapply. Do you still have your SGC?

Just an update, I have got my FAC back and the constabulary dealing with everything has been great and understanding, explained the situation and have received the new one today.
